women's basketball U-M Advances To Second Round Of The NCAA Tournament A fter a 20-win season in 2011‑12, the Wolverines snuck into the NCAA Tournament — their first trip to The Big Dance in 10 years. At the time, Michigan was just happy to make it. After one game — an 88-67 loss to Oklahoma — the team travelled back to Ann Arbor, still flush with the excitement of having experienced the magic of March Madness first hand. This year, the Wolverines wanted more. For a program that has struggled to achieve sustained success, Michigan wanted to continue its ascent toward legitimacy. "Making it to the tournament was really great, but we told ourselves that it wasn't going to be enough," sophomore guard Nicole Elmblad said. "We really wanted to win. To win that first game was really big for us." The Wolverines did just that, dispatching No. 9 seed Villanova Senior forward Rachel Sheffer scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Wolverines past Villanova 60-52 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. photo by per kjeldsen
