Spring Game Features Host Of Highlights Michigan fans tough enough to brave the chill and spitting moisture in and around The Big House for the annual spring scrimmage saw plenty about which to draw encouragement. From the very first play, the Wolverines showed an emphasis on the passing game, as well as an ability to rush the quarterback on defense. There were highlight catches, some determined runs and nifty cuts by backs, and any number of young performers to size up through the binoculars. Here are a few of the notables from the April 13 scrimmage at Michigan Stadium. Best Offensive Performer — This title goes to redshirt junior quarterback Devin Gardner, who has taken charge of the offense and stands ready to build on his efforts late last season. Gardner went 11-of-16 passing during the scrimmage, throwing for 142 yards and a touchdown without tossing an interception. He looked perfectly poised throughout, although the quarterbacks sported orange jerseys signifying that could not be hit. Best Defensive Performer — There were a number of eye-catchers, including freshman defensive end Taco Charlton, who ignored the orange jersey and smacked down walk-on quarterbacks on two occasions.
