Spices Up Spring Game
Louis Nix makes the No. 1 on his jersey look like a toothpick. And for the
first time in his Notre Dame career, the
hulking nose guard got to pick other
defenders out of his teeth.
An overall dull offensive performance at the Blue-Gold Game April 20
got a shot of "Irish Chocolate" when
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly
paid off a losing wager. Following the
only touchdown of the scrimmage,
the 347-pound Nix lined up at quarterback, dropped back as if to pass,
bolted as quickly as a man that size
can up the middle and dove into the
end zone for a two-point conversion.
It woke up the 31,652 spectators in
attendance and put a smile on every
Fighting Irish player's face — none
bigger than the 500-watt grin beaming
from the behemoth senior defensive
star. That the Blue (defense) topped
the Gold (offense) 54-43 in a modified
scoring format became more of a side
note.
"Lou and I had a personal bet on
some academics, and he surprised
me," Kelly said. "He surprised me,
and so I paid up. I said, 'What do you
