■ pack past point — a grand slam off Allen earlier in the season. Morris hit another to give the Tigers the 11-7 victory. The Pack still earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but it had no hope of hosting a regional at the old configuration of Doak Field. So it was sent, as the top seed, to Stillwater, Okla., along with two of the nation's top five offensive teams, including host Oklahoma State. The Pack's pitching, which had been so strong throughout the year, held the line despite the fact that Sports, the team's No. 3 starter all season, was out of the lineup with injuries to both his shoulder and his groin. His absence forced Tanner to dip into his bullpen for junior Rob Steinert and sophomore Rob Winkler, moving them into starting roles. After Senior pitched the Pack to a win over Fordham, Harvey lost a 5-2 heartbreaker to Arizona. The Pack offense helped Steinert to a 13-2 win over Auburn, but Tanner's team just couldn't overcome the host Cowboys, whose NCAA-leading offense averaged nearly 10 runs a game. "We had such a good team that year. We had all the components to make it to the College World Series." ■ Harvey, at his induction into the NC State Baseball Hall of Fame. Winkler held the home team to a single home run through six innings, but the Cowboys sent 10 players to the plate in the seventh and eliminated the Wolfpack with an 8-3 victory. The Wolfpack finished with a schoolrecord 49 victories on the season, but short of the elusive trip to Omaha. "I was happy to win 49 games," Tanner said after the season was over. "Anytime in college baseball you can get in that 40-plus win category, you've got to consider it a pretty good year. So even though I'd have liked to have played a few more games this year, I'm very happy that we were able to win as many games as we did. "We just want to continue to have a good enough program that we can stay in the regionals, because one of these years we'll be able to get out of the regionals and make it up that big step." Tanner took two of his final three NC State teams back to regionals before leaving to become the head coach at South Carolina, but never made it up that final step. ■ • comprehensive financial planning and investment advisory services for individuals. • Full service plan management for profit Sharing/401k plans. • consulting for corporate retirement plans and non-profits. www.Guardianca.com Proud suPPorter of the WolfPack since 1996 guardian capital adviSOrS, llc 3948 brOwning place, Suite 200 • raleigh, nc 27609 ph: (919)782-7619 tOll free: (800) 948-6761 e-Mail: info@guardianca.com SecuritieS Offered thrOugh triad adviSOrS, MeMber Finra/Sipc and adviSOry ServiceS Offered thrOugh guardian capital adviSOrS, LLc, a regiStered inveStMent adviSer.
