hoo's hot Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Julia Elbaba ◆ Women's Tennis The Oyster Bay, N.Y., na‑ tive was one of two Vir‑ ginia rookies named to the All-ACC squad, and she was also awarded the league's Rookie of the Year honor. Elbaba was joined on the all-conference team by classmate Stephanie Nauta, and she wrapped up the regular season of her debut campaign with a team-best record of 33-9, including a 17-7 mark in dual action. Her 33 victories set a program standard for first-years, and that figure stands as the second-best single-season total ever. Elbaba was ranked No. 12 nationally heading into May, and she is the first women's player in school history to earn a seed for the NCAA Singles Championship. JB Kolod ◆ Men's Diving The second-year from Pittsburgh posted the highest NCAA finish in Virginia men's diving his‑ tory March 29 with his 12th-place showing on the three-meter springboard, which earned him honor‑ able mention All-America accolades. Only one other athlete in program annals has ever earned All-America honors (Briggy Imbriglia, with a 13th-place finish last year). It was a stellar year for Kolod, who was also honored with the team's Coaches' Award at the end-of-the-year banquet after he set school records in both the one- and three-meter dives this season. Kolod also finished 21st in the platform dive at the NCAA Championships and placed eighth at the ACC Championships in the event with the second-best platform score in program history. Melanie Mitchell ◆ Softball The fourth-year hurler from White Plains, Md., fin‑ ished rewriting the UVa re‑ cord books this year, most notably setting a program standard in strikeouts. She became just the seventh pitcher in ACC history to eclipse 1,000 career strike‑ outs (1,096) and shattered the previous school record of 932, which was held by Michelle Collins (1991, '93-95). In addition to the strikeout record, Mitchell holds the program standards in career appearances (160), games started (143), innings pitched (936), complete games (116) and wins (79). She was 16-16 with one save, a 2.59 ERA and 265 strikeouts in 211 innings of work over 35 appearances (31 starts) this year. Tanner Scales ◆ Men's Lacrosse The men's lacrosse team will miss the NCAA Tourna‑ ment for the first time since 2004, but the Cavaliers had several bright spots that point toward a promis‑ ing future. It all starts with Scales, who was named the ACC Freshman of the Year. It is the 11th such honor for a Cavalier, but
