hoo's talking "It was a fantastic season for our program. We had two All-Americans, beat three ranked teams in duals, competed in the national duals event and went down to the final match in contention to win the ACC championship. There are so many positives, but we still have work to be done and we'll get back at it on Monday. I'm already excited to get started working for next season." — Wrestling coach Steve Garland after his team finished 21st at the NCAA Championships (the Cavs were paced by All-Americans Jedd Moore, sixth place at 157 pounds, and Nick Sulzer, eighth at 165) "I believe both Luke and Courtney have had outstanding first-year seasons from beginning to end. They immediately made their mark as highly competitive and mentally and physically tough athletes. Both set lofty goals and worked hard to achieve those goals. Their performances through the dual meet season, to their even more impressive performances at the ACC and NCAA Championships, speaks to their excellence and future promise." — Swimming and diving coach Mark Bernardino on first-years Courtney Bartholomew and Luke Papendick being named the ACC Freshmen of the Year (both also earned honorable mention All-America honors this year) "Bringing a program like Notre Dame into Scott Stadium falls in line with the type of competitive scheduling we have done for the upcoming seasons. Our tre‑ mendous fan base will get to see some of the top programs in the nation come to Scott Stadium in the coming years like Oregon this season and UCLA in 2014. In addition to Notre Dame, we are hosting Boise State in 2015, and adding the Irish photo by Matt Riley/courtesy UVa falls in line with all the exciting aspects going on with Virginia football right now." — Football coach Mike London after it was announced that the Cavs would host Notre Dame in 2015 this month in uva history ◆ June 1, 1972 — The UVa baseball team takes part in its first NCAA baseball tournament with an 18‑2 victory over Richmond in Gastonia, N.C. Virginia beat Mississippi the next day, 9-3, before falling to South Alabama and Mississippi. ◆ June 1-4, 1988 — Paul Ereng wins the first outdoor track and field national championship in program history after winning the gold medal in the 800 meters. Ereng would go on to win the Olympic gold in 1988 and then repeat his NCAA first-place finish the next year. Ereng led the Cavaliers to a 24th-place showing at the NCAA Cham‑ pionships — their first-ever top-25 placing at the event. ◆ June 14, 1997 — Representing the largest single monetary gift in school history at that time, UVa alumnus and former Cavalier football player Carl W. Smith pledges $25 million to his alma mater. The university announces that the bulk of Smith's gift — $23 million — will be used toward funding the expansion and enhancement of Scott Stadium, ultimately increasing its seating capacity to 61,500 by the year 2000.
