But really, the main reason why I left was the frustration of not progressing. I knew coming out of high school, I needed to go somewhere and develop. I thought Notre Dame was the place. I think I developed in a lot of ways. But in quarterback play, I think I regressed in certain areas over time. It was incredibly frustrating. ... At times, it got to the point where I could not even throw the ball at all. My footwork was all jacked up. "Growing up, I was a Notre Dame and Pitt fan. Notre Dame, it was always the appeal of it for me, the Golden Dome and the dream part of it. I wanted to go experience that. But I got to see it for what it is. It's not just what you see watching games on NBC. But I don't regret going there." — Former Notre Dame quarterback Phil Jurkovec, who transferred in the spring and is the presumed starter at Boston College (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) "We have to manage expectations. I don't think there's any point in time where you say, 'We're past this. It's over.' We're going to have games canceled, have interruptions. We understood that when we headed down this path." — Notre Dame director of athletics Jack Swarbrick on his mentality as the college football season progresses during the COVID-19 pandemic "What Coach Elston always says is we're only one of 11. You do your job and your job only. That will set up you to probably make the play if you do your job and everyone else [does] their job … you don't have to [be the one to] make the play every single play." — Notre Dame sophomore defensive end Isaiah Foskey on defensive line coach Mike Elston "We played a role. I had a reporter call me one day and he said to me, 'I've just talked to eight head coaches and ADs. When I asked them what would happen with the season, seven of the eight said it de- pends on what Notre Dame does.' So I don't think we saved the season, but I think a lot of people were looking to us to see how a school that's a top-15 U.S. News and World Report institution to whom football is extremely important, how they'd do this and move forward." — Swarbrick on if Notre Dame saved the college football season "I entered the portal and I would say in probably a week, a week and a half, I got in contact with Coach [Terry] Joseph, and then he explained the situations of them looking for a new corners coach. But I just de- veloped a good relationship with Coach Joseph. I couldn't visit anywhere at all due to the pandemic, but just that trust with Coach Joseph explaining the situation to me and also my relationship with Troy [Pride Jr.] and Houston [Griffith] definitely helped a lot to make the decision a little easier for me." — Notre Dame corner- back Nick McCloud, who transferred from North Carolina State as a graduate student during the offseason "Pregame, this was the most emotional. It was six months to the day since we shut down our athletics program in March. What everyone had to do to get us in a position — student-athletes, coaches, staff, volunteers — to not only play, but invite students, faculty and staff into the stadium was such an effort." — Swarbrick on the Packer and Durham radio show OF THE WEEK ➤ With just 50 days until the election, 322 Irish student-athletes are registered to vote.
