22 SEPT. 26, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED 5:19 left, Notre Dame did not score for the first time in five possessions when a 38-yard field goal attempt by senior Jonathan Doerer hooked to the left … A poor USF snap on a punt attempt that went into the end zone resulted in another short punt and Irish possession at the Bulls' 25-yard line. Four plays later, Book snuck in from the 1-yard line for his third touchdown with 1:55 left. THIRD QUARTER NOTRE DAME, 45-0 Top Moment: With 3:23 remain- ing, another snap that sailed over USF punter Trent Schneider led to a blocked kick by junior linebacker Osita Ekwonu and a recovery of the ball just past the goal line by fresh- man defensive end Jordan Botelho. Feature Performer: On USF's first series of the second half, it drove to Notre Dame's 36-yard line, but on fourth-and-four, Lewis broke up a pass that he nearly intercepted. Ear- lier in the series Lewis also batted away a deep pass attempt. Then on USF's second series of the half, Lewis tipped another long ball flung into the end zone that junior safety DJ Brown nearly intercepted. Stats: USF actually outgained Notre Dame 85-69 in total yardage during the quarter and ran more plays in that stanza (23) than the en- tire first half (21). Items: Doerer's 22-yard field goal with 6:34 increased Notre Dame's lead to 38-0 … Freshman quarterback Drew Pyne was inserted in place of Book late in the quarter. FOURTH QUARTER NOTRE DAME, 52-0 Top Moment: Senior running back Jafar Armstrong capped the scoring with a five-yard touchdown sweep on fourth-and-goal with 2:15 remaining. Feature Performer: Flemister carried eight times for 71 yards in the quarter, displaying both dash to the outside and tackle-shaking skills inside. Soph- omore cornerback Cam Hart also was active with two passes broken up. Stats: Notre Dame ran only 25 plays in the second half, but still pro- duced 150 yards (6.0 yards per play). Items: At one point, Notre Dame had an all-freshman defensive line with ends Botelho and Alexander Eh- rensberger — who recorded a sack in the third quarter — and interior men Rylie Mills and Aidan Keanaaina. ✦ Sophomore Jack Kiser was a late addition to the starting lineup at Buck linebacker, but responded with a team-high eight stops and earned the game ball.
