www.BLUEANDGOLD.com SEPT. 26, 2020 15 UNDER THE DOME 50 Years Ago: Sept. 26, 1970 No. 6-ranked Notre Dame ends a three-year losing streak to Purdue with a resounding 48-0 victory (24-0 each half) at home on a rainy day. Quarterback Joe Theismann com- pletes 16 of 24 passes for 276 yards, with Thom Gatewood catching 12 for 192 yards and tying the school record with three touchdowns receiving set by Jim Seymour four years earlier when Notre Dame last defeated the Boilermakers. Halfback Larry Parker also romps 63 yards for a score on his first career carry to help the Irish outgain Purdue 633-144. 45 Years Ago: Sept. 27, 1975 After falling behind 7-0 and starting quarterback Rick Slager getting injured in the first quarter versus Northwestern, sophomore Joe Montana is inserted by first-year head coach Dan Devine in his Notre Dame Stadium debut. Montana provides an instant spark, finishing 6-of-11 passing for 80 yards with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Mark McLane, while adding 28 rushing yards with a six-yard tally, in the 31-7 Irish victory to improve to 3-0. Meanwhile, 17-year-old freshman Bob Golic makes his starting debut at middle linebacker and re- cords 10 tackles, while rookie classmate Jerome Heavens rushes for 106 yards on 15 carries. 30 Years Ago: Sept. 22, 1990 One week after making the game-winning touchdown catch from 18 yards with 1:40 remaining in a 28-24 triumph versus No. 4 Michigan, flanker Adrian Jarrell snares "The Immaculate Deflection" in the closing minute to help rally No. 1 Notre Dame to a 20-19 victory at No. 24 Michigan State. Trailing 19-7 in the fourth quarter, the Irish close to within 19-14. They then drive to the Spartan 26-yard line with less than a minute left when sophomore quarterback Rick Mirer rolls out and fires a bullet toward the goal line — where Michigan State's Todd Murray is waiting for it. The ball bounces off the chest of Murray, ricochets straight up, and falls into the hands of a diving Jarrell for a 24-yard gain. The fortuitous plays sets up fullback Rodney Culver's game-winning touchdown run with only 34 seconds remaining. 15 Years Ago: Sept. 24, 2005 First-year head coach Charlie Weis' Fighting Irish defeat his deposed predecessor Tyrone Willingham's Washington Huskies 36-17 in Seattle. Quarterback Brady Quinn passes for 327 yards, with junior classmate Jeff Samardzija accounting for a career-high 164 receiving yards on eight catches, highlighted by a 52-yard score. Sophomore Darius Walker rushes for a career-best 128 yards on 21 carries and becomes the first Fighting Irish back to eclipse 100 rushing yards in the first four games of any season. Yet the story of the game is "Pass Right." The week of the game, Weis visited with 10-year-old Mon- tana Mazurkiewicz, a huge Notre Dame fan with an inoperable brain tumor. When Weis asks him to call the first play for the Washington game, the response is "pass right." The youngster dies the Friday before the game, but Weis keeps his promise the next day — even when Notre Dame's opening possession comes from its own 1-yard line. "Brady said 'What are we going to do?'" Weis said. "I said 'We have no choice. We're throwing it to the right.'" Quinn completes the toss to tight end Anthony Fasano, who then leaps over a defender for a 13-yard gain. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Sept. 21-27 Wide receiver Thom Gatewood caught 12 passes for 192 yards and tied a school record with three touchdown receptions in a 48-0 win over Purdue in 1970.
