www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 17, 2020 29 mistakes early in the game, Notre Dame pulls away and there's no ques- tioning a moderate point differential against a poor FSU team. "We gave them 10 points," Kelly said. "Otherwise, we keep them to 16." OFFENSE EXCELS WITH MORE THAN A DOZEN CHUNK PLAYS The Notre Dame offense exploded for 554 yards, averaging 8.3 yards per play. While this is a result of the Irish dominating at every offensive facet of the game, a significant portion of this production came on a handful of chunk plays (receptions of more than 15 yards or rushes of more than 10 yards). In total, Notre Dame had 13 chunk plays for 335 yards, which means 60 percent of their total yards came on just 19 percent of the offensive snaps. Nine of these plays came on the ground, including the three biggest gains for the Irish in the game. Sopho- more running back Kyren Williams had a run of 65 yards and another for 46 yards and a touchdown. Later, freshman running back Chris Tyree outran the entire FSU defense in the second quarter for a 45-yard score. The passing game also contributed to the chunk plays, especially fifth- year wide receiver Javon McKin- ley. After catching just one pass for seven yards in Notre Dame's first two games of the 2020 season, he emerged with several big gains. On the day, the 6-2 wideout had five catches for 107 yards, hauling in every ball thrown his way. He had receptions of 38, 36 and 17 yards. "He can't be defended," head coach Brian Kelly said of McKinley. "There's nobody, I don't think, in college foot- ball that can defend that kid. [Asante] Samuel is one of the best corners in the country, and he didn't have much of a chance to defend him. "If he just continues to work the way he's been working, he's been one of our better practice players. He is a great leader with those wide receiv- ers. I've been telling him he's got a chance to do some special things." NOTRE DAME'S DEFENSE PLAYS SLUGGISH Notre Dame ran into one unideal combination against Florida State. Its defense took three weeks off from game action and was without a starter and an intriguing backup. The Seminoles' woeful offense got a jump-start the week prior from quar- terback Jordan Travis, who came off the bench to lead five straight scoring drives against Jacksonville State and earn the start against the Irish. The result was a defensive perfor- mance that won't be mistaken for something great. But one that still came in a win. "That was not our 'A' game — but good teams win when they have their 'B' or 'C' game," head coach NOTRE DAME INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Rushing Att. Gain Lost Net Avg.
