46 OCT. 17, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED FOOTBALL RECRUITING ROUNDUP • We took a look at Notre Dame's two offered class of 2022 quarterback re- cruits thus far in the last issue of Blue & Gold Illustrated, and with the two-week bye, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and Co. continued their pursuit of poten- tial future signal-callers. On Oct. 5, Rees and recruiting coordina- tor Brian Polian had Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic's Steven Angeli, who is Rivals' No. 5 player in the Garden State and No. 12 pro-style quarterback nationally, on a virtual visit via a Zoom video chat call. "The virtual tour was really awesome," Angeli told BGI. Angeli had a call the previous week with the Irish staff to learn various aca- demic information about Notre Dame, and the second visit was to see the cam- pus via video format. Angeli began his junior season Oct. 3 and led Bergen Catholic to a 24-21 victory over Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph Regional, completing 17 of 29 throws for 217 yards with two scores. Owensboro (Ky.) High's Gavin Wimsatt, the country's No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and No. 50 overall recruit per Rivals, has also gone through both presentations with Rees. • Notre Dame has 19 commitments in its 2021 class, although as we've been noting for months, there have been rumors floating around that Man- sfield (Texas) Legacy's David Abiara, the No. 24 strong-side defensive end nationally per Rivals, will end up flipping from his Irish pledge. If that does indeed happen, then Notre Dame would have 18 verbals, and the focus for the Irish is on the defensive side of the ball. Hono- lulu Punahou's Kahanu Kia, a three-star recruit per Rivals, is the lone target at linebacker, and there are a few options in the defensive backfield. • In September, Notre Dame offered Indianapolis North Central's Theran Johnson, a Northwestern commit who is rated as the No. 68 cornerback in the land by Rivals, but he seems content with his pledge to the Wildcats. Don't be surprised to see news in a future issue of BGI that the Irish have of- fered more defensive backs. The coach- ing staff is evaluating various prospects, especially in the state of Georgia. • With the NCAA's dead period still in effect, college coaches can't have face- to-face contact with prospective student-athletes. However, recruits can still visit campus on their own dime and walk around campus for a self-guided tour. In August, Jonesborough (Tenn.) David Crockett's Prince Kollie, the No. 22 outside linebacker nationally per Rivals, committed to the Fighting Irish sight unseen. He made his first trip to campus Oct. 2-3 with his high school coach Kevin Ramsey to walk around campus, and Kollie loved it. — Mike Singer Quarterback Tyler Buchner, 6-2, 210, La Mesa, Calif.
