www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 27, 2020 53 Had it been prior to 1996, Fight- ing Irish head coach Brian Kelly un- doubtedly would have had to go for two points and the win as the No. 4 team at home versus the top-ranked squad. A deadlock in such a situation wouldn't aid the cause to reach the summit. "We had a two-point play that was, we felt, a really good one," Kelly said. "I thought about it. We had just worked too hard to get back into the game, and so it just didn't feel right to go for two there." While advancing to the BCS Na- tional Championship Game in 2012, Notre Dame also had to rally late in the fourth quarter to first tie Stanford (13-13) and later Pitt (20-20) before winning in overtime. Eight years later, overtime could serve the Irish well again. Notre Dame needed an epic goal-line stand to defeat Stanford 20-13 in the first of what would be two overtime wins in the 2012 undefeated regular season. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA
