Under the Dome Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: June/July 70 Years Ago: June 24, 1943 Twenty-six-year-old Theodore Martin Hesburgh is ordained as a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross in Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame. Today, Rev. Hesburgh, C.S.C., is the oldest and longest-serving priest in the congregation's United States Province. The president emeritus of Notre Dame, who served as the school's president from 1952-87, turned 96 on May 25 and was honored at a special reception three days earlier at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. He also was one of 22 members of the Holy Cross order honored for the anniversaries of their ordination on May 24 at Sacred Heart. Earlier this year, Rev. Hesburgh was at a ceremony where he was honored as Honorary Navy Chaplain. One of the nation's most renowned religious figures, he holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for "Most Honorary Degrees," having been awarded 150. 25 Years Ago: June 28, 1988 David Rivers becomes Notre Dame head coach Digger Phelps' ninth first-round NBA Draft pick when his name is called for the final selection (25th overall) of that first round by the Los Angeles Lakers, who earlier in the month won their second straight NBA title. Prior to his junior year at Notre Dame, Rivers nearly lost his life when a van accident nearly caused him to bleed to death. "I got a second chance," Rivers said humbly of his status. "God could have taken my life in the accident. I'm just happy to get a chance to do what I can." He becomes the fifth guard in school history to be selected in the first round, joining Austin Carr (1971), Gary Brokaw (1974), Bill Hanzlik (1980) and John Paxson (1983). Since Rivers' selection, no other Notre Dame
