MAY/JUNE 2021 ■ 15 TRACKING THE PACK On Aug. 11, the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences pulled the plug, temporarily it turned out, on their football seasons. Around that time, the NCAA had also announced that it would not be hosting national championships for the fall sports, such as soccer, volleyball and cross country. At that point, COVID-19 was making the outlook for collegiate athletics in 2020-21 bleak. Fast-forward to mid-April, and NC State has enjoyed some of its most note- worthy accomplishments in its athletics history, with the women's sports teams leading the way. There is not going to be a Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup — given an- nually to the most successful overall athletics program — this year due to the pandemic, but had there been standings NC State could have challenged its best-ever finish of 15th. Here are some of the highlights from the field of competition so far: SPORT FINISH Women's Cross Country Second at NCAA Championships Notable: Matched best NCAA finish in history (2001) and won its fifth straight ACC title Women's Swimming & Diving Second at NCAA Championships Notable: Best NCAA finish (previous was seventh, done twice), with first-ever relay (two) and individual (three) national titles Women's Basketball 22-3 overall, 12-2 ACC, NCAA Sweet 16 Notable: Second straight ACC Tournament title, first-ever No. 1 seed at NCAAs and third straight Sweet 16 Women's Tennis In progress Notable: Ranked No. 5 in final Oracle/ITA collegiate tennis rankings for the regular season Wrestling 6-1 in duals, sixth at NCAA Championships Notable: Third straight ACC title and second-best finish at NCAAs (tied for fourth in 2018) Men's Swimming & Diving Eighth at NCAA Championships Notable: Sixth straight top-10 finish at NCAAs Men's Golf In Progress Notable: Ranked eighth nationally by Golfstat as of April 14 Gymnastics NCAA Regional Finals Notable: First appearance in NCAA Regional Finals Football 8-4, 7-3 ACC Notable: School record for the most ACC wins CHARTING THE PACK 2020-21 Shaping Up To Be A Banner Year For NC State Athletics Etch Your Name Into Wolfpack History One Brick At A Time 1.
