First Chance Meet (Feb. 16-17), the Wolverines solidified their lineup in a big way. Freshman Anders Lie Nielson swam the second-fastest recorded time up to that point of the season in the 200-yard freestyle (1:33.66, behind only Louisville's Joao De Lucca's 1:32.57). The 200-yard medley relay team — senior Miguel Ortiz, sophomore sophomore Daniel Miller (500-yard freestyle, 4:20.90); and freshman Will Raynor (200-yard individual medley, 1:48.06). "We knew we had great depth here, but it was really shown at our First Chance meet," Jaeger said. "That was when a group of guys had their first opportunity to earn the last couple of spots on the Big Ten Championship meet team. Ev- Bruno Ortiz, senior Sean Fletcher and fifth-year senior Zachary Turk — posted an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 1:24.69. And five swimmers set NCAA 'B' cuts in the two-day event: senior Connor McCarroll (200-yard backstroke, 1:45.03); freshman Matt McNamara (100-yard breaststroke, 54.56, the 200-yard breaststroke, 1:58.08, and the 200-yard individual medley, 1:47.92); freshman Paul Corbae (200-yard breaststroke, 1:58.61); eryone swam unbelievably fast. That gave everyone a confidence boost going into the championship season, because the workout program obviously worked this season. We had guys who could score points at Big Tens all over the roster, and we had to leave a couple guys who we knew could score points at home. That's how much depth we had."
