The Padres left-hander had been on the disabled list since exiting his June 21 start after just two pitches and is slated for late July shoulder surgery. MLB.com reports Richard "will have surgery to essentially shave down part of his left clavicle so he doesn't encounter future problems with his acromioclavicular joint." The good news — there's no structural shoulder damage. "It's never good to have surgery, but it's nice that it's not necessarily in the shoulder itself," Richard said. Richard allowed the most hits and most homers in the National League a year ago and struck out the league's fewest batters per nine innings, but he still posted a 3.99 ERA. He went 2-5 with a 7.01 ERA in 53 innings this year, starting 11 games. It was a step back for Getz in his quest to be the franchise's every day second baseman — he hit .275 last year and .450 in spring training. Whether or not he makes it back with the big club this year isn't his primary goal, he told the Omaha World News. "I'm really not focused on that — and I really mean that," Getz said. "I'm just trying to find myself as a player right now, to get where I need to be. If it's here [Kansas City organization] or elsewhere, for the following year or whatever, I'm just trying to put myself in a good position for success on the field."
