12 THE WOLVERINE JUNE / JULY 2022   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS WOMEN'S HOOPS ADDS FORMER MCDONALD'S ALL-AMERICAN FROM TRANSFER PORTAL TO ROUND OUT NEW CLASS Michigan women's basketball just had its best season in program history. Now, it has added another first to its recent success. The Wolverines grabbed 6-foot guard Greta Kampschro- eder out of the transfer portal on May 1. This makes her the first former McDonald's All-American to sign with Michigan. Kampschroeder played in 31 games and made 25 starts last season at Oregon State, averaging 5.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game during her freshman season. Previously, she was the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Illinois and the No. 32 recruit in the 2021 class per ESPN. "I chose Michigan to help build on the winning tradition that has grown under coach [Kim Barnes] Arico," Kamp- schroeder said in a release. "I've always admired the way her team competes while having fun. I also look forward to developing my own game with such a great coaching staff. I feel fortunate to have the chance to pursue my education at a world-class institution." Kampschroeder, a native of Naperville, Ill., also was a Jor- dan Brand Classic All-American and Naismith Under Armour All-America honorable mention coming out of high school. She averaged 17.8 points and 10 rebounds per game during her senior season, and Blue Star rated her as the No. 8 recruit nationally. Barnes Arico was fired up about the addition. "She is the total package — an ability to score, a knack for making people around her better, defensive prowess, rebounding and leadership," the coach said. "Greta is a play- maker and a winner who has experience playing against the very best." Kampschroeder's addition gives U-M a quartet of new- comers to the program for the 2022-23 season. The Wol- verines signed three recruits to National Letters of Intent on Nov. 11 in 6-foot-1 guard Kate Clarke (Carmel, Ind.) and a pair of 6-foot-2 forwards in Alyssa Crockett ( West- field, Ind.) and Chyra Evans (Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia). HoopGurlz/espnW ranks Clarke (6-1) as a four-star pros- pect and the No. 99 player in the 2022 class. She was lim- ited to 13 games as a senior due to a back injury, but she scored 18 or more points in six of her final seven games. Crockett also carries a four-star designation and is the 48th-ranked player nationally per HoopGurlz/espnW. She set career-bests in points (18.5), rebounds (8.5), steals (2) and blocks (1.5) as a senior. Both Crockett and Clarke were selected as 2022 IndyStar Indiana Girls All-Stars. Evans helped lead Australia to the silver medal at the FIBA U19 World event in the summer of 2021, where she aver- aged 6.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. She also was part of an Under 20 Australian Junior Championship gold medal-winning team, where she had 18.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and earned MVP honors at the tourna- ment. The Wolverines went 25-7 this past season, heading to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight for the first time in history. Michigan hopes these additions will continue to push the program forward after a season for the ages. — Anthony Broome FORMER FOOTBALL ASSISTANT STAN PARRISH PASSES AWAY AT 75 The Michigan football family lost one of its own with the passing of former assistant coach Stan Parrish on April 3. Parrish, 75, had been going through a bout with cancer. He was part of the staff from 1996 to 2001, coaching the quarterbacks before being elevated to offensive coordina- tor in 2000. He spent his entire time in Ann Arbor working under head coach Lloyd Carr. "Michigan football is saddened by the passing of Stan Par- rish," the program posted on social media. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and all of the players that Stan mentored during his career. Rest in Peace." Parrish was responsible for developing quarterbacks Brian Griese and Tom Brady, among others, during his tenure. He won a national title with the Wolverines in 1997. The pro- gram never won fewer than eight games with him on staff. Parrish left Michigan before the 2002 season to take a job as quarterbacks coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His move was met with immediate success when the Bucs won the Super Bowl that season with Brad Johnson at quarter- back. He would go on to be the head coach at Ball State from 2008-10. Other head coaching stops in his career included Wabash, Marshall and Kansas State. Parrish also spent time as a Division I assistant with Rutgers, Eastern Michigan and Purdue. — Anthony Broome Greta Kampschroeder, a 6-foot guard transfer from Oregon State, becomes the first McDonald's All-American to sign with Michigan.
