Forcing more turnovers will be a key to success this season, and Canady has the potential to become the ball-hawking defensive back the Wahoos desperately need. Top Five Games 1. Virginia Tech, Nov. 30 — Last season seemed like the Cavaliers best shot in a long time to end the losing streak to the archrival Hokies, but Virginia fell apart late and suffered yet another loss, a 17-14 setback. Getting to a bowl game and posting a winning ACC record would be nice, but Wahoos players, coaches and fans aren't going to be satisfied until they get over the hump against Virginia Tech, which is often also the key to winning the Coastal Division. 2. BYU, Aug. 31 — Second-year quarterback Taysom Hill leads the Cougars into Scott Stadium for a season opener that could set the tone for both teams. It would be a great start for Virginia to get a victory against a big-name BYU program that finished 8-5 last season and returns key players including Hill and second-year running back Jamaal Williams. Topping BYU to start the season could renew optimism, while a loss could be the start of a tough opening stretch. 3. Oregon, Sept. 7 — Speaking of that opening stretch, the Cavaliers certainly aren't bringing cupcakes into Charlottesville to start the season. The Ducks, who finished 12‑1 last season, have a new head coach in Mark Helfrich, but Virginia fans should figure to get a look at the same flashy offense and even flashier uniforms that Oregon came to be known for under Chip Kelly. The Ducks return 16 starters, including star quarterback Marcus Mariota. This might be the toughest of a tough slate of games. 4. At Maryland, Oct. 12 — The Terps suffered an unbelievable number of injuries last season and struggled all the way through, yet somehow managed to pull off a 27-20 victory in Charlottesville. You can bet Virginia would like nothing more than to send the Big Ten-bound Terrapins out of the ACC with a loss to close out the rivalry, but Virginia has to travel to College Park and Maryland should be much better than last season. 5. At Pittsburgh, Sept. 28 — The Panthers are a new ACC rival, one the Cavaliers figure to battle on the field and in recruiting, and this game is also the conference opener for Virginia. Getting a victory versus Pitt would get UVa off on the right foot in the ACC after a poor showing in conference last season. The Panthers are just looking for stability, bringing in new quarterback Tom Savage after a series of coaching changes since 2010. Top Five Position Groups 1. Defensive Line — Redshirt fourth-year defensive end Jake Snyder and second-year defen- Second-year end Eli Harold — who compiled 36 stops, seven tackles for loss and two sacks in his debut campaign — is a key part of a deep and talented defensive line. photo by Pete Emerson/courtesy UVa
