Three of the five triumphs came in the ACC Tournament, including a 4-0 win over Maryland in the championship game. Those performances, coupled with a run to the NCAA Tournament's round of 16, led to the women's soccer squad being named Virginia's Women's Team of the Year. "The neat thing was how the team jelled as the season wore on," head coach Steve Swanson said. "We played some of our best soccer at the end of the year, which is what you always want to see. "You can make an argument that to win the ACC championship, the five games we had to win were harder than any five games we would have had to play in the NCAA Tournament." "Winning the ACC championship is one of the hardest things to do," second-year midfielder Morgan Brian added. "Some people say that winning the ACC Tournament is harder than winning the actual NCAA Tournament because you're playing all the top teams in the country, just in your conference tournament. Every team you play is in at least the top 10 or top 15 [in the country]." The season started off on a challenging note due to Swanson and Brian's participation with the United States Under-20 team. Coach and player missed the first eight and nine games, respectively, while they were in Japan winning a gold medal. UVa, which was coached by assistants Ron Raab and Kerry Dziczkaniec, dropped its season opener at home to Penn State, but then responded by winning eight straight games.
