"What afforded him that opportunity was he was
very advanced in his approach at the plate. A lot of
times when you bring in a young player, they swing
and miss at pitches off the plate. Joe was very good
with his plate discipline."
As McCarthy's three-sport background would
attest, he also is a top-notch athlete.

In his first season at Virginia, McCarthy hit .336 and drove in 51 runs en route to Freshman AllAmerica, ACC Freshman of the Year and second-team All-ACC accolades.
