AUGUST 2022 19 Sept. 3 vs. Richmond All-time series: UVA leads 29-3-2 The Spiders are back on Virginia's schedule for the first time since the 2018 season. Richmond has been UVA's season-opening opponent four times since 2010, including a 42-13 win on Sept. 1, 2018. Virginia has won 10 of the last 11 meetings and has dropped only one game against the Spiders since 1947. Sept. 10 at Illinois All-time series: Illinois leads 2-1 The Cavaliers and the Illini will complete their home-and- home series with one another by squaring off in Cham- paign, Ill., for the first time ever. Prior to UVA's dominant 42- 14 victory at Scott Stadium last season, the two programs had met only two other occasions, both in bowl games. Virginia will look to continue its recent success against Big Ten foes, having won five of its last seven games against them. Sept. 17 vs. Old Dominion All-time series: UVA leads 1-0 The mid-September meeting between the two schools separated by just 165 miles on I-64 will be just the second ever. ODU started its football program in 2009 and joined the FBS ranks in 2014. The first meeting between the Monarchs and Cava- liers was in 2019, a 28-17 victory in Charlottesville. UVA erased a 17-0 ODU lead with 28 unanswered points and held the Monarchs to 48 yards of total offense in the second half. Sept. 23 at Syracuse All-time series: UVA leads 3-2 Virginia will make a trip up to Syracuse to the newly named JMA Wireless Dome for the first time since 2005 and first time since the Orange joined the ACC in 2013. Current associate head coach and wide receivers coach Marques Hagans was under center for both victories of the home-and-home series between the two schools in 2004 and 2005. The last game between Syracuse and Virginia was a three-overtime thriller in which UVA prevailed 44-38 on Oct. 17, 2015. Oct. 1 at Duke All-time series: UVA leads 40-33 Both UVA and Duke will feature first-time head coaches in the 2022 meeting. Duke's Tim Elko and UVA's Tony Elliott were both considered two of the top assistant coaches in college football before landing their first coaching gigs. History favors the Hoos, who have won seven straight against the Blue Devils, including a 48-0 victory last season at Scott Stadium. Oct. 8 vs. Louisville All-time series: Tied 5-5 The budding rivalry between Louisville and Virginia added another chapter last season. Virginia recorded its first-ever road victory over the Cardinals after rallying from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit to win 34-33 on a touchdown pass from Brennan Armstrong to Grant Misch with 22 seconds left on the clock. Louisville, along with North Carolina and Virginia Tech, will be scheduling part- ners in the ACC's new 3-5-5 structure set to go into effect for the 2023 season. Oct. 20 at Georgia Tech All-time series: Tied 21-21-5 Virginia will play its lone Thursday night contest on the road in Atlanta this season. The Cavaliers will look to take control of the all-time series and are seeking their third straight win over the Yellow Jackets. With the exception of the 2020 season, UVA and Georgia Tech have met every year since 1981. Armstrong and the Virginia offense amassed 636 yards in a 48-40 victory last fall. Oct. 29 Vs. Miami All-time series: Miami leads 11-8 The Cavaliers conquered their recent woes at Hard Rock Stadium with a 30-28 win that came down to the final play last year. For the first time since 2018, the Hurricanes will come to Scott Stadium, where UVA has won five of the eight meetings against their Coastal Division foe. Nov. 5 vs. North Carolina All-time series: UNC leads 64-58-4 The South's oldest rivalry and the second oldest rivalry in the FBS, will take place in Charlottesville this year. The Tar Heels snapped Virginia's four-game series win streak last season with a 59-39 victory in Chapel Hill. Armstrong broke UVA's single-game passing record (554 yards) and single-game total offense record (538 yards) in that contest. Nov. 12 vs. Pittsburgh All-Time Series: Pitt leads 9-4 The 2022 matchup will be vastly different from the Coastal Division showdown late in the 2021 season. Gone from Pitt's roster is first round NFL Draft pick Kenny Pickett and Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison. Three of the Cavaliers' four wins against the Panthers have come at Scott Stadium. Nov. 19 vs. Coastal Carolina All-time series: First meeting Virginia and Coastal Carolina will square off for the first time in the final non-conference game of the year. It will be the first of three meetings in the next four seasons between the Cavaliers and Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina will bring one of the most potent of- fenses in the country to Charlottesville. The quarterback battle between Coastal's Grayson McCall and UVA's Armstrong will be one of the most highly anticipated of the college football season. Nov. 26 at Virginia Tech All-time series: VT leads 60-38-5 The 103rd Commonwealth Clash in Blacksburg will conclude the 2022 regular season. The Cavaliers will look to avenge a 29-24 loss last season that came down to the final drive. UVA will be seeking its first road win against Virginia Tech since 1998. — Scott Fitzgerald 2022 SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN
