8 CAVALIER CORNER cavalier sports Photo courtesy UVA Pietro Bovari • Golf For the first time in his career, the third-year from Milano, Italy, was named to the 2022 PING All-East Region Team by the Golf Coaches As- sociation of America. Bovari led UVA in stroke average this season (71.06) and was the team's top finisher in six tourna- ments, including the ACC Championships and NCAA New Haven Regional. During the season he posted five top-10 results and shot par or better in 22 of 33 rounds. Maria Deaviz • Track and Field The second-year from Souderton, Pa., became the first-ever Cavalier woman to claim first-team All-America honors in the shot put, notching a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Out- door Championships in June. Deaviz recorded a career-best toss of 17.97 meters, capping an outstanding sophomore campaign that saw her take down Virginia records in the shot put both indoors and outdoors, while sweeping the ACC indoor and outdoor titles in the event. Nicola Lawless • Rowing The fourth-year from London earned a spot on the All-ACC Academic Row- ing Team and was named the ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Lawless, who graduated with a double major in biology and cognitive science, is a two-time ACC champion and three-time All-ACC Academic team honoree. Rowing in the four seat of UVA's varsity eight, Lawless helped the Cava- liers to their 12th consecutive ACC championship and 21st overall in the 22 years of the event. Griff O'Ferrall • Baseball The first-year shortstop from Rich- mond, Va., was named a first-team Freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America, becoming the first Cavalier since Joe McCarthy in 2013 to earn that honor. O'Ferrall started and led off all 58 games this sea- son, and posted a .308 average, 56 runs scored, 2 home runs and 39 RBI. He also swiped a team-best 17 bases, tied for the third most by a Cavalier first- year since 2004. HOO'S HOT Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVA athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. 2nd Cavalier to be crowned the discus national champion is second-year CLAUDIO ROMERO, joining Filip Mihaljevic (2017). The ACC Men's Field Performer of the Year outdueled Cal's Mykolas Alekna at the NCAA Outdoor Cham- pionships June 10 at Eugene, Ore., winning with a top throw of 66.17 meters. Romero also was tabbed the ACC Men's Field Performer of the Year and named the Men's Southeast Regional Field Athlete of the Year by U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He joined a club of just four Cavaliers to be named a first-team All- American on more than one occasion in the discus. " I feel really good. Sometimes even the best athletes come short of the NCAA Championship. Being able to call myself that is definitely one of the mile- stones of my athletic career that I wanted to check as soon as possible." — Claudio Romero on winning the NCAA discus title 6 All-America accolades for UVA second-year third-baseman Jake Gelof following his outstanding 2022 season. It marks the second straight season UVA has produced a consensus All-American. After hitting .377 with 21 home runs and a school-record 81 RBI, Gelof collected All-America acco- lades from ABCA/Rawlings (second team), Baseball America (third team), Collegiate Baseball Newspa- per (third team), D1Baseball.com (third team), NCBWA (third team) and Perfect Game (second team). Gelof, a media studies major, also became the seventh baseball player in UVA history to garner Aca- demic All-America honors, and the fourth to make the first team. 2 Former Virginia standouts — tight end Heath Miller (2001-04) and wide receiver Herman Moore (1988-90) — were among the 80 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdi- vision listed on the 2023 ballot for in- duction into the College Football Hall of Fame. The 2023 class will be officially inducted during the 65th National Foot- ball Foundation Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5, 2023. A total of five former Cavalier play- ers — Bill Dudley (1956), Tom Scott (1979), Joe Palumbo (1999), Jim Dom- browski (2008) and Anthony Poindexter (2020) — and three coaches — Earle "Greasy" Neale (1967), Frank Murray (1983) and George Welsh (2004) — have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. No. 1 Ranking for Virginia men's lacrosse incoming class of 2022, according to Inside Lacrosse. The nine-man class includes: at- tack Ryan Colsey, faceoff specialist/midfielder Mac Eldridge (No. 8 overall pros- pect in the nation per the National Lacrosse Federation [NLF] and No. 10 per Inside Lacrosse [IL]), defenseman Malachi Jones (No. 46 per NLF), goalie Kyle Morris, midfielder Tim Myers, defenseman John Schroter (No. 17 per NLF), at- tack Truitt Sunderland (No. 4 per IL), midfielder Joey Terenzi (No. 2 per NLF and No. 3 per IL) and midfielder Mack Till.
