OCTOBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 47   FOOTBALL RECRUITING Tight End Commits: 2 Need: 2 Michigan holds commitments from four-star prospect Deakon Tonielli (6-5, 200) from Oswego, Ill., and three-star prospect Zack Marshall (6-4, 220) from Carlsbad, Calif. Both Tonielli and Marshall are athletic flex ends that bring a lot to the table as pass catchers. Tonielli is a plus basket- ball player and can create plenty of mis- matches in the red zone, while Marshall recorded more than 1,000 yards receiving as a junior. The pair needs to improve as in-line blockers, but Grant Newsome's first haul at Michigan has a ton of upside. Michigan is done at the tight end position this cycle. Offensive Line Commits: 2 Need: 4-5 Michigan has two sterling offensive line commits this cycle in Evan Link and Amir Herring. Link is one of the nation's premier tackles (On3's No. 11 offensive lineman and No. 125 overall prospect nationally), while Herring (On3's No. 19 interior offensive lineman and No. 295 overall prospect nationally) brings an ex- tremely high floor as an interior offensive lineman. Michigan would like to add a few more linemen to the fold after bringing in just two high school offensive linemen a year ago. The wish list starts with On3's No. 8 tackle and No. 82 overall prospect Caleb Lomu (6-5, 265) from Gilbert (Ariz.) Highland, who made an unofficial visit for the BBQ at The Big House and will return for an official visit this fall. Michigan has momentum in the Lomu recruitment, but the Arizona native is high on Oregon and USC. Michigan will have to fight to pull him from out West. The same could be said about Provo (Utah) Timpview tackle Spencer Fano (6- 4, 250), who is the No. 14 offensive tackle and No. 160 overall prospect nationally per On3. Oregon, BYU and Utah are high on his mind, but Michigan has remained a dark horse. The Wolverines made a big impression on him during his offseason trip to U-M, and he is set to return to Ann Arbor for an official visit next month. Conyers (Ga.) Eagles Landing Christian prospect DJ Chester (6-5, 295) is at the top of the interior offensive line board. Ches- ter is rated as the No. 10 interior offensive lineman and No. 118 overall prospect na- tionally. While Auburn and LSU are considered the favorites, Michigan has more stability and will have a chance to impress him on his official visit this fall. Michigan is also very high on fellow Peach State native Nathan Efobi (6-4, 282) from Cumming (Ga.) South Forsyth. The No. 91 overall prospect and No. 6 in- terior offensive lineman in the country called Michigan his "dream school" this summer and is close to locking up an of- ficial visit. Another prospect around the top of the IOL board is Texas Tech commit Nick Fat- tig (6-4, 280). The three-star prospect from League City (Texas) Clear Springs picked the Red Raiders this summer, but he is looking to make an official visit to Michigan before the end of the cycle. He is rated as On3's No. 37 interior lineman nationally. Michigan offered On3 Consensus four- star Sandy (Utah) Alta offensive linemen Taliafi Ta'ala (6-5, 295) and could make a bigger push this fall depending on how things shake out with Chester, Efobi and Fattig. A name worth keeping an eye on later in the cycle is five-star Notre Dame tackle commit Charles Jagusah (6-6, 300) from Rock Island (Ill.) Alleman. He is On3's No. 1 offensive tackle and No. 6 overall Caleb Lomu is a 6-5, 265-pound offensive lineman from Gilbert, Ariz. On3 rates him as the No. 8 offensive tackle and No. 82 overall prospect in the class of 2023. PHOTO COURTESY ON3.COM 2023 Michigan Commitments List Player Pos. Ht. Wt.
