MICHIGAN FOOTBALL bor and trending in a positive direction. I look forward to rejoining our team soon." Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said grad assistant Nico Tiberia coached the group in Hart's absence at Indiana, though analyst and former Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson also appeared heavily involved on the side- lines. Jackson coached Hart during his tenure at Michigan, starting him as a freshman in 2004 and working with him through 2007. Harbaugh later indicated that Jackson would take over for Hart as long as nec- essary, with Michigan having obtained an NCAA waiver to allow Jackson to coach until Hart came back and rejoined the team. That turned out to be sooner than most Wolverine watchers were expecting. Later in the week, co-offensive co- ordinator Sherrone Moore confirmed that Hart had joined meetings via Zoom and contributed to the Wolverines' game plan for its showdown with Penn State. Then, on Friday, Oct. 14 Hart was spot- ted on the recruiting trail by The Wol- verine's EJ Holland at the Dexter (Mich.) High vs. Saline (Mich.) High game to watch four-star U-M running back com- mit Cole Cabana. He was smiling and relaxed while attending the game with tight ends coach Grant Newsome. The next day, Hart was back on the sideline at Michigan Stadium, and his good health provided a lift for everyone, including his running backs who led Michigan to a staggering 418 yards rush- ing against Penn State. "It was great," Harbaugh said. "Mike came back coaching Thursday and couldn't wait to get back. He could have probably been out longer, but he's not ready to get away from greatness yet. He came back as soon as he possibly could, and we all appreciate that. "He looked great and did a heck of a job. We already gave him the game ball [vs. Indiana], and probably will give him another one this week; 418 yards rush- ing, that's quite a statement. Mike loves the team; the team loves Mike. It's great to have him back." — Chris Balas EYABI OKIE DETERMINED TO WRITE HIS OWN NARRATIVE AT MICHIGAN Michigan made waves 13 days before the season began by adding former five- star pass rusher Eyabi Okie to its roster for the 2022 season. The opportunity to play at Michigan was more than just a second chance for the edge defender. It is likely his final chance at the col- legiate level to prove he is not only ca- pable of being a productive pass rusher, but a productive man off the field, too. Okie, who spent time at Alabama, Houston, and UT Martin, entered the transfer portal on Aug. 15. Michigan was involved in his recruiting during the 2018 cycle, and he played for associ- ate head coach Biff Poggi at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. Michigan fans will recognize that as the same school that has produced junior running back Blake Corum, ju- nior linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green and freshman edge Derrick Moore, among others.
