56 THE WOLVERINE NOVEMBER 2022 WRESTLING First Event: Nov. 5 at Michigan State Open Season Outlook: The Wolverines are coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, capturing their first Big Ten championship since 1973 and notching a second-place fin- ish at the NCAA Championships. Head coach Sean Bormet was named National Wrestling Coaches Association National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year, and will guide a group that competes against five teams that fin- ished in the top 20 at last year's NCAA Championships. In mid-October, Flo- Wrestling ranked the Wolverines as the No. 5 tournament team in the country. Top Three Athletes Fifth-Year Senior Mason Parris: Two-time NCAA All-American in the heavyweight category … Finished fifth at the NCAA Championships in 2022, posting a 5-2 record in the event. Re d s h i r t S e n i o r Wi l l L ewa n : NCAA All-American at 157 pounds … Claimed fifth place at the NCAA Championships last spring with a 4-2 record … Finished second at the Big Ten Championships with a 3-1 mark. Redshirt Junior Cameron Amine: NCAA All-American at 165 pounds … Finished fourth at the NCAA Champion- ships with a 4-2 record … Placed second at the Big Ten Championships, going 3-1. MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING First Event: Oct. 7-8 at SMU Classic (fourth out of six teams) and Oct. 8 at Oakland University (W, 169-107) Season Outlook: The Wolverines, ranked No. 15 nationally in the preseason by SwimSwam, are hoping to improve on a season that saw them finish third out of eight teams at the Big Ten Championships and 22nd at the NCAA Championships this past spring. Head coach Mike Bottom received a six-year extension last spring that keeps him under contract through the 2026-27 season in Ann Arbor. Top Three Athletes Sophomore Gal Groumi: Six-time All-American and Big Ten champion last season … Finished 10th in the 100- yard butterfly, 15th in the 200-yard butterfly and 11th in the 200-yard in- dividual medley at the NCAA Cham- pionships … Placed third in 100-yard butterfly, second in 200-yard butterfly and first in 200-yard individual medley at the Big Ten Championships. Junior Wyatt Davis: First-team All- Big Ten and two-time All-American dur- ing the 2020-21 season, but did not com- pete after Dec. 4 last year … Finished 32nd in the 200-yard backstroke and tied for 34th in 100-yard backstroke at the 2021 NCAA Championships … Placed second in 200-yard backstroke, fourth in 100-yard backstroke and sixth in 200-yard freestyle at the 2021 Big Ten Championships. Sophomore Bence Szabados: All- American in the 200-yard freestyle re- lay in 2022 … Finished sixth in the 50- yard freestyle, 12th in 100-yard freestyle and 10th in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2022 Big Ten Championships. WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING First Event: Oct. 7-8 at SMU Classic (second out of six teams) and Oct. 8 at Oakland University (W, 160-97) Season Outlook: U-M is looking to repeat and surpass the success it had during the 2021-22 campaign, when it finished second out of 12 teams at the Big Ten Championships and placed sev- enth at the NCAA Championships. The Wolverines were listed 13th in the Swim- Swam national preseason rankings. Top Three Athletes Junior Kathryn Ackerman: Honor- able mention All-American in the 400- yard individual medley and a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2021 … Finished 37th in 500-yard freestyle and 28th in the 400-yard individual medley at the NCAA Championships … Placed fourth in 500- yard freestyle, seventh in 1,650-yard free- style and fourth in the 400-yard individ- ual medley at the Big Ten Championships. Sophomore Letitia Sim: Three-time All-American last year … Finished 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke, 18th in the 200-yard breaststroke and 21st in the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Championships … Placed third in 100- yard breaststroke, and sixth in 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley at the Big Ten Championships. Sophomore Lindsay Flynn: Five- time All-American last season … Fin- ished 25th in 50-yard freestyle and 11th in the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships … Placed fourth in 50- yard freestyle and sixth in 100-yard freestyle in the Big Ten Championships. — Anthony Broome OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Winter Sports Previews Fifth-year senior Mason Parris is a two-time All-American and placed fifth at the NCAA Championships in 2022.
