44 THE WOLVERINE NOVEMBER 2022 THEY SAID IT Dug McDaniel is going to be special. Having that chip on his shoul- der and being competitive, smart, and just knows how to play. Has great basketball instincts. That kid is going to be someone where everyone needs to grab your seatbelts and strap in. He's gonna do some things out there on the floor. Like all freshmen, you're gonna make some mistakes. That's a part of it. He is going to find his way to be a winner. "He's earned [playing time]. Duggie is going to make you play him. I'm not afraid to say it to the public or to our opposing teams. It's going to happen." – U-M men's basketball head coach Juwan Howard on freshman point guard DUG McDANIEL's chances of playing early, and often, to start the season The Good: Hunter Dickinson is caught in the same vortex as so many college bigs — the NBA simply doesn't have proper use for his skills — and so he's back and doing much of the heavy lifting [for 7th- ranked Michigan]. Jett Howard — Juwan's kid — wasn't the nation's top recruit, but sure grabbed Allen Iverson's attention last spring. The Bad: The losses are heavy, but let's not forget: These guys were pretty bad last year, thus the 11 seed into the NCAA Tournament before playing into the Sweet 16. Attrition isn't always a bad thing and it's hard to imagine worse results than last year's pre-March. The Prediction: Dickinson's a difference maker and the addition of transfers Jae- lin Llewellyn (Princeton), JOEY BAKER (Duke) and a gaggle of high-end recruits equates to a roster capable of making a title run … or at least one that does not have to sit on pins and needles come se- lection Sunday." – Lindy's Sports on ranking Michigan No. 7 ahead of the 2022-23 basketball season $868,000 Is Hunter Dickinson's On3 NIL Valuation as of Oct. 13. That's the fifth highest of college basketball players and ranks 31st among all college athletes. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry's leading index that sets the standard market NIL value for high school and col- lege athletes. It calculates the optimized NIL opportunity for athletes relative to the overall NIL market and projects out to as long as 12 months into the future. 3rd In the Big Ten is where U-M ranked in The Athletic/Co- lumbus Dispatch preseason media poll, behind No. 1 Indiana and No. 2 Illinois. The Wolverines received one first-place vote and were picked as low as seventh by one writer, Brian Fonseca of NJ.com. 14 NBA Draft picks over the last 10 years for Michigan, which leads the Big Ten and is four selections ahead of second-place Michigan State. The latest were guard/forward Caleb Houstan (second round, No. 32 overall to the Orlando Magic) and forward Moussa Diabate (No. 43, sec- ond round to the Los Angeles Clippers). 58th 58th Is where Michigan graduate point guard Jaelin Llewellyn checked in on ESPN.com's ranking of the top 100 transfers in college bas- ketball this offseason. Llewellyn joined U-M from Princeton, where he was a first-team All-Ivy League standout last season who av- eraged 15.8 points per game and shot 39.6 percent from 3-point range. The Maize and Blue also added Duke graduate transfer for- ward Joey Baker, who averaged 4.5 points and 1.2 rebounds per outing while shooting 40.5 percent from 3-point range with the Blue Devils in 2021-22.
