NOVEMBER 2022 THE WOLVERINE 57   OLYMPIC SPORTS Hockey The No. 5-ranked Wolverines (3-1 record) swept Lindenwood (7-4, 3-1) on opening weekend Oct. 7-8 before splitting a two-game se- ries with No. 9 Boston University on Oct. 14-16. U-M grabbed a 9-2 victory on Oct. 14. Sophomore Mackie Samoskevich and fresh- man Seamus Casey each scored a pair of goals and added one as- sist each in the game, while fresh- men Gavin Brindley, T.J. Hughes and Rutger McGroarty all notched their first career goals. The Terriers won the second game in the series 3-2 thanks to a trio of goals in the second pe- riod. Hughes was the lone Michi- gan player with multiple points, scoring the first goal of the night and assisting on the second. Ju- nior goalie Erik Portillo made 28 saves in the contest while taking the loss. Next up for Michigan is a two- game road trip to Lake Superior State on Oct. 21-22 with both games streamed live on FloHock- eyTV (7 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Satur- day). Men's Cross Country U-M's men's runners finished 20th of 33 teams at the Nutty- combe Wisconsin Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Champion- ship Cross Countr y Course on Oct. 14. Graduate student Arjun Jha finished 46th in the 8-kilome- ter (about 5 miles) run, finishing with a career-best time of 23:42.9. Senior Tom Brady finished 56th in his season debut, giving the Wol- verines a pair of top-60 finishers. Select members of the team will compete in the EMU Fall Classic in Dexter, Mich., before the Big Ten Championships at U-M Golf Course on Oct. 28. Women's Cross Country No. 18 Michigan finished 21st of 36 teams in the Nutty- combe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 14. Fifth-year Kayle Windemuller finished in 68th place and was Michigan's fast- est runner throughout the showcase, finishing with a sea- son-best time of 20:37.8 in the 6-kilometer (3.73 miles) run. Other top-100 finishers included senior Sam Tran (20:48.8) and fifth-year Samantha Saenz (20:54.5). A small group of Wolverines will compete on Oct. 21 in the EMU Fall Classic before Big Ten Championships on Oct. 28. Men's Soccer U-M moved to 4-7-3 on the season with a 3-0 nonconference win over Bradley on Oct. 14 at home. Freshman Nicholas Cassiday scored the game- winner and his first collegiate goal, while freshman Nicholas Kaloukian scored for the second straight con- test. The Wolverines outshot Bradley 22-3, with 12 shots on goal. Michigan travels to Rutgers on Oct. 21 for a Big Ten contest set for 7 p.m. ET on B1G+ before a trip to Notre Dame on Oct. 25. Women's Soccer The Wolverines (6-7-3, 1-5-2 Big Ten) fell 3-0 to No. 25 Penn State on the road on Oct. 16. Senior Sammi Woods led U-M with 3 shots on the day, while graduate student Izzy Nino and senior Katherine McEloy combined to make 5 saves in goal. U-M closes out the regular season with a pair of home matches against No. 8 Rutgers (Oct. 20, 7 p.m., Big Ten Network) and Indiana (Oct. 23, 2 p.m., B1G+). Field Hockey The 10th-ranked Wolverines (9-4 record) grabbed a 2-0 win over No. 5 Iowa on Oct. 16, extending their win streak to five games in a row and marking a third win over a ranked opponent so far this season. Graduate student Tina D'Anjolell and junior Lora Clarke were the two goal-scorers for U-M. The Wolverines outshot Iowa 21-3 in the game with fifth-year goalkeeper Anna Spieker securing the shutout. U-M closes out the regular sea- son in Evanston, Ill., with a game at defending NCAA champion North- western Oct. 21 and a showdown with Iowa Oct. 23, both at the Wild- cats' Lakeside Field. Volleyball Michigan fell to No. 5 Wisconsin 3-1 (27-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-22) at UW Field House on Oct. 16. The No. 24-ranked U-M squad (13-5, 4-4 Big Ten) was led by junior Jess Mruzik's 12 kills, while redshirt junior Hannah Grant had 20 digs in the contest. Senior Jess Robinson and freshman Serena Nyambio combined for 11 blocks, with Robinson leading all players with a .556 hitting percentage. The Wolverines return to game action at home on Oct. 21 when Indiana comes to Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor. A home date with Wisconsin follows on Oct. 23. — Anthony Broome Junior midfielder Lora Clarke scored the insurance goal in the No. 10 U-M field hockey team's 2-0 shutout win over No. 5 Iowa on Oct. 16.
