www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 26, 2022 53 LINEBACKER Eric Patton 1969-71 Santa Ana (Mater Dei H.S.) Patton's coaches at Mater Dei had so much confidence in him that they played a 6-1 defense — six linemen and Patton as the sole linebacker. He was a two-year starter on dominant Irish defenses that allowed 7 or fewer points in 14 of 21 games in 1970-71. LINEBACKER Kory Minor 1995-98 LaVerne (Bishop Amat H.S.) Fulfilling a childhood dream to attend Notre Dame and play football, Minor became a defensive mainstay for the Irish at outside linebacker. He amassed 245 tackles, 43.5 tackles for loss, 22.5 sacks and 5 interceptions. LINEBACKER Joe Schmidt 2011-15 Orange (Mater Dei H.S.) Schmidt's was the ultimate feel-good story, ascending from walk-on to starter and co-captain as a senior in 2015. For his career, he totaled 164 tackles (6.5 for loss) and 3 interceptions. DEFENSIVE BACK Larry "Moon" Mullins 1927-30 Pasadena (Pasadena H.S.) In the one-platoon era, Mullins lined up as the starting fullback for the na- tional champion teams of 1929-30, primarily as a blocker. On defense, he helped the Irish limit opponents to 5.9 points per game over the two seasons. DEFENSIVE BACK Shane Walton 1999-2002 La Jolla (The Bishop's School) Walton came to Notre Dame on a soc- cer scholarship and was named Big East Freshman of the Year in 1998, leading the Irish in scoring. He walked on to the foot- ball team and was named a unanimous first-team All-American as a senior in 2002, with 68 tackles and 7 interceptions, 2 of which he returned for touchdowns. DEFENSIVE BACK Terrail Lambert 2005-08 Oxnard (St. Bonaventure H.S.) In 48 games for the Irish, Lambert came up with 115 tackles and 4 inter- ceptions, none bigger than the one he returned 23 yards for the winning TD in the "Monsoon Miracle" at Michigan State in 2006, when Notre Dame scored 19 unanswered points to win 40-37. DEFENSIVE BACK Max Redfield 2013-15 Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo H.S.) Redfield played in 28 games over three seasons, contributing with 143 tackles (including 82 solo) and a pair of inter- ceptions. RETURN SPECIALIST Joey Getherall 1997-2000 Hacienda Heights (Bishop Amat H.S.) A fearless competitor, Getherall re- turned 49 punts for 598 yards. His senior season was off the charts — he posted an amazing average of 16.3 yards per return, with 2 touchdowns.
