"It can all be a little overwhelming, but I have a lot of good people here helping me navigate through it. "It's unfortunate that you can't run forever, but the cool thing about being a student-athlete right now is that you can take advantage of op- portunities to make sure when running is done, there will be other opportunities." Opportunities On The Horizon Tuohy has made a conscious effort to withdraw from the shell that has often been her retreat. She is rightfully wary of some of the entities, both human and corporate, who all of a sudden want to partner with her. Grand opportunities come with grand pitfalls, especially in a world where so- cial media followers are just friends who haven't asked for anything yet. Tuohy has learned how to keep them at arm's length, but she's also having fun in the process. She's embraced the concepts of being on a team through cross country, learn- ing that the solitary sport of running can be a group effort when scoring is deter- mined by the top five finishers. Even in track, she appreciates that three of her teammates were among the top finishers in the 3,000 and the 5,000. She's found a little fun off the course and the track as well. In February, she spoke at a Chancellor's reception be- fore a men's basketball game, sharing some of the wit she normally reserves for her closest friends with the select donors who were invited to attend. In April, she sounded the siren at a Carolina Hurricanes game and received a standing ova- tion from the crowd. She's learning who to trust and who the scoundrels are that might be out to take advantage of her talent. Like that run with her dad nearly a de- cade ago, Tuohy is just a little too quick for them all. ■ " She's extremely determined. She's as good as anyone that we have ever had at learning things quickly and not making the same mistake twice.
