JUNE/JULY 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 13 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Oliver Mirer is a defensive midfielder who helped lead U-M to its first-ever Big Ten Tourna- ment championship and NCAA Tournament ap- pearance. Heading into the NCAA Tournament first round, he had played in all 15 games, collecting 1 assist, 7 ground balls and 7 caused turnovers. Here are some things about Mirer you may not have known: Best Aspect Of Being From San Diego: "The Mexican food. … And the beach. I love surfing." Favorite Restaurant In Ann Arbor: "A new spot called Taystee's Burgers." Best Meal He Can Cook By Himself: "This may be a pathetic answer, but scrambled eggs and bacon. I'm pretty good with the breakfast stuff. My lunch and dinner skills are lacking." Favorite Professional Athlete: "My dad [Rick]. He played pro football, 12 years in the NFL. I was alive for the tail end of his career. His work ethic and perspective on what sports can do and how they can change your life had a huge impact on me." Sport He Enjoys Playing Besides Lacrosse: "My favorite sport is golf. If it's a nice day, I try to get out there." Favorite Television Show: "Right now, 'Suits.' Historically, probably 'The Office.'" Favorite Movie: "'Die Hard.'" Why He Chose Michigan: "My dad played at Notre Dame, my older brother played lacrosse at Notre Dame. So, I kind of always had a push to go there, but I wanted to do something different. I came out to a camp here my freshman year of high school, and I just loved everything about the place. Best decision I've ever made in my life." What He Hopes To Do After Lacrosse: "I just took a job with an insurance group in Chicago. I wouldn't say I have my whole life mapped out quite yet, but it was a good opportunity. I really wanted to go to Chicago." Favorite Memory At Michigan: "Right now, it's gotta be that Big Ten championship game. That was one of the most euphoric moments of my life. Just seeing all the guys smiling and crying, that was something I'll never forget." Overall Experience At Michigan: "It's been the people I've met along the way. Honestly, I couldn't have handpicked a better friend group — guys I live with, guys on the team. On top of, obviously, having the greatest facilities in the world, best professors, you name it, every op- portunity. Everything I have in my life right now, I'd say I owe to this place." — Clayton Sayfie Mirer, a senior defensive midfielder from San Diego, is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2021-22).
