THE WOLVERINE 2023 FOOTBALL PREVIEW ■ 149 BY THE NUMBERS: The 2022 NFL Season 2 Former Michigan quarterbacks retired from the NFL after the 2022 campaign — Tampa Bay's Tom Brady and Kansas City's Chad Henne. Brady is widely regarded as the best football player to ever play, while Henne was a longtime backup who walked away after his team won the Super Bowl. Henne, 37, started 54 of his 78 game appearances during his career, completing 59.6 percent of his passes for 13,290 yards and 60 touchdowns with 63 interceptions. 5th Among NFL edge rushers was where Green Bay Packers linebacker Rashan Gary slotted in Pro Football Focus' pass rush productivity metric before going down with a season-ending ACL injury nine games into the season. He was off to a terrific start, with 6 sacks and 12 quarterback hits. 9 Michigan players were chosen in the 2023 NFL Draft, the third-most among all schools (Alabama and Georgia each had 10), marking the eighth time the Wolverines have had eight or more in a draft. The Wolverines' selections were defensive tackle Mazi Smith (first round, Dallas Cowboys), tight end LUKE SCHOONMAKER (second round, Dallas Cow- boys), cornerback DJ Turner (second round, Cincinnati Ben- gals), kicker Jake Moody (third round, San Francisco 49ers), defensive end Mike Morris (fifth round, Seattle Seahawks), center Olu Oluwatimi (fifth round, Seattle Seahawks), punter Brad Robbins (sixth round, Cincinnati Bengals), offensive tackle Ryan Hayes (seventh round, Miami Dolphins) and wide receiver Ronnie Bell (seventh round, San Francisco 49ers). The Maize and Blue have now had 53 draft picks under head coach Jim Harbaugh, including nine in the first round and 23 in the top 100. 9 Straight years in which at least one Wolverine has won the Super Bowl, with defensive ends Mike Danna and Frank Clark and Henne being crowned champions with the Kansas City Chiefs by beating defensive end Brandon Graham and the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, in Glendale, Ariz. 13.5 Postseason sacks for FRANK CLARK, the third- most in NFL history behind former New Eng- land Patriots outside linebacker Willie McGinest and former Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith. Clark recorded 2.5 sacks in the 2022 playoffs (as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, helping the team to a Super Bowl victory), passing former Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals and Chiefs out- side linebacker Terrell Suggs. It took Clark 16 playoff games to reach the number. PHOTO COURTESY KANSAS CITY CHIEFS PHOTO COURTESY DALLAS COWBOYS
