BIOS POSITION COACH Kirk Campbell takes over as quarterbacks coach in 2023 after spending last season as an offen- sive analyst for the Wolverines. U-M's newest offensive assistant helped the full-time coaching staff last year behind the scenes and has previous Big Ten coach- ing experience, serving as an analyst (2017-19) and interim quarterbacks coach at the tail end of Penn State's 2019 season. Prior to arriving in Ann Arbor, Campbell was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Old Dominion in 2020-21. Earlier, Campbell was offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Alderson Broaddus (2012- 16) and got his coaching start at Tiffin in 2011. "Kirk is a bright, young offensive mind that im- mediately meshed with our coaching staff last year," head coach Jim Harbaugh said after his hir- ing. "He was integral to the success of the offense with game planning and opponent scouting. Kirk does an outstanding job developing relationships and I know he will have an outstanding rapport with our quarterbacks." RETURNING PLAYERS J.J. McCARTHY • QB Jr. • La Grange Park, Ill. Ht.: 6-3 • Wt.: 196 • Appeared in all 14 games with 13 starts in 2022, going 12-1 in his first season as a starter including a U-M record 12-0 start. • Completed 208 of 322 passes for 2,719 yards, 22 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Added 306 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on 70 carries. • Career-long pass of 75 yards came on a touch- down throw to Cornelius Johnson against Ohio State last year, and his longest run was a 39-yarder against TCU in the playoff. • Earned All-Big Ten honors (second team, coaches; third team, media). Also earned Aca- demic All-Big Ten honors. • Named U-M's 2022 Offensive Player of the Year. • Ranked 22nd nationally in pass efficiency (155.0 rating) and 32nd in completion percentage (64.6). • As a true freshman, connected on 34 of his 59 pass attempts for 516 yards and 5 touchdowns with 2 interceptions in 2021. Also rushed for 124 yards and 2 scores, while playing in 11 contests and totaling 166 snaps. • Shared the U-M 2021 Rookie of the Year award on offense (Donovan Edwards and Andrel An- thony). • Named the 2020 Florida High School Player of the Year by MaxPreps, after leading IMG Acad- emy, the publication's No. 1 team in the nation on the season, to an 8-0 record. • Invited to both the All-American Bowl and Polynesian Bowl as a senior. • Ranked as a four-star prospect, as well as the No. 9 quarterback and No. 47 overall player in the class of 2021 by the On3 Indus- try Ranking. Also had 30 rushing yards. • Team debut came versus Hawaii (Sept. 10), completing a career-long pass of 56 yards to tight end Max Bredesen. • An Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2022. • Named U-M's Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year in 2021. • Transferred to Suffield Academy in 2020, but the season was canceled. • Beat cancer diagnosis in 2019 and returned to play at the Peddie School in New Jersey. • Spent first three seasons of prep play at Loyola High in Los Angeles. ALEX ORJI • QB So. • Sachse, Texas Ht.: 6-3 • Wt.: 235 • Appeared in three games last season, completing 1 pass for 5 yards. Rushed for 2 touch- downs while totaling 6 carries for 37 yards. Averaged 6.2 yards per carry with no negative yardage. • In his last two years of high school combined, he passed for 3,467 yards and 38 touchdowns and rushed for 2,113 yards and 39 scores. • Four-star prospect was tabbed as the No. 391 overall player, 12th-best athlete nationally and No. 60 recruit in Texas, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. NEWCOMERS JACK TUTTLE • QB Gr. • San Marcos, Calif. Ht.: 6-4 • Wt.: 212 • Graduate transfer to U-M in January who was a team cap- tain at Indiana in 2022. • Four-year letter winner at IU, appearing in 15 games with five starts, completing 104 of 182 passes for 901 yards, 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. • Appeared in one game last season, completing 9 of 12 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. • Six appearances with two starts in 2021, going 45-of-87 for 423 yards with 2 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. • Suited up for eight games in 2019-20 at Indi- ana, throwing for 396 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. • Rostered but did not see action at Utah in 2018. • Completed 205 of 295 passes as a senior at Mission Hills High, throwing for 3,171 yards with 41 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, add- ing 207 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. • Rated a four-star prospect and No. 163 player, No. 14 QB and 25th-best player in California in the Class of 2018, per On3's Industry Ranking.
