40 SEPT. 30, 2023 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED GAME PREVIEW: DUKE Notre Dame fans are well-acquainted with graduate student quarterback Sam Hartman by now, but as a refresher: through four games, Hartman is 64 of 90 for 1,061 yards (11.8 yards per attempt) with 13 touchdowns and 0 intercep- tions. Notre Dame gets the edge here because we've yet to see how far Duke's pass defense has come against a top-flight aerial attack. But it's only by a hair. Advantage: Notre Dame SPECIAL TEAMS Notre Dame graduate kicker Spencer Shrader was 3 of 6 on field goals through four games, but 5 of those kicks came from 40 yards or more and 4 of them from 50 yards or more. Shrader is 2 of 4 from 50 or more yards out, including a 54-yarder that stands as the longest made field goal in pro- gram history. Duke sophomore kicker Todd Pelino was 3 of 4 through three contests, but his one miss was a 29-yarder against Lafayette. Neither kicker had missed an extra point through Week 3. Irish sophomore punter Bryce McFerson is an athletic punter with a big leg, averaging 48.8 yards per punt this season. Duke graduate stu- dent Porter Wilson is 6-foot-5, 231 pounds and is at 53.5 yards per punt with a season long of 70. Notre Dame's core special teamers generally grade better than Duke's, with graduate safety DJ Brown leading the charge with an 82.3 grade. The Irish also have a blocked kick, courtesy of de- fensive tackle Jason Onye, but the Blue Devils do, too, with redshirt freshman defensive end Wesley Williams making a big play early against Clemson. Calhoun is Duke's primary punt returner, aver- aging 9.7 yards per return, but he made a critical mistake with a muff that led to Clemson's only points that game. Senior slot receiver Chris Tyree has averaged 6.5 yards per punt return for the Irish. Graduate student running back and primary kick returner Devyn Ford fumbled on a kickoff while suffering a concussion, largely due to poor blocking, but he fielded the kick on a bounce. The only real edge here is Shrader 's range. Pelino has never made one outside 50 yards. Advantage: Notre Dame OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Yr.
