OCTOBER 2023 33 cavalier profile CAROLINE TIMM Graduate Student • Cross Country It's a dangerous combination to retain the core of a top-10 NCAA cross coun- try team while adding top talent from the transfer portal. That's exactly what the Virginia women's cross country team did heading into a 2023 campaign in which it will host three of the nation's top cross country meets at Panorama Farms — in- cluding the NCAA Championships in November. Among the talented incoming class was transfer Caroline Timm, who has put together a strong career after coming to Virginia by way of Princeton and Kennesaw State. A 1,500-meter specialist on the track, Timm is no stranger to performing in championship events. At Princeton, Timm advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 1,500 meters and placed 18th at the meet. The follow- ing fall at Kennesaw State, Timm finished 33rd as an individual at the 2022 South Regional Cross Country Championships. Joining a Cavalier team that is on the rise after finishing ninth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2022, Timm showed what she brings to the table in her Cavalier debut at the Spider Alumni Open in Richmond. She led the 11th-ranked Cavaliers through the finish line with a 4K time of 13:29.5 to win the individual title for the first time in her colle- giate cross country career. To cap an impressive performance for the newcomer, the Cavaliers came away with a runaway victory when her teammates went 2-6-7-13 to win the race by a margin of 46 points. The success continued for Timm in Virginia's first major meet of the season at Panorama Farms. At a Virginia Invitational covered in constant rainfall, Timm turned in an impressive final split moving up 12 places to place 27th overall with a 5K time of 16:55.3 to help carry Virginia to a third-place finish in the team standings. The stakes will only get higher for the Cavaliers when they progress to the XC23 Pre-Nationals and into the championship season. Behind an established group of returners and experienced newcomers like Timm, Virginia has its sights set even higher than a year ago for the 2023 campaign. — Quinn Hull • Photo courtesy UVA Athletics
