C O M MEN'S SOCCER: The Nittany Lions bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Penn on Sept. 8 by winning their next four in a row and moving up to No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. Penn State opened its Big Ten season with shutout wins over Ohio State (3-0, Sept. 15) and Maryland (1-0, Sept. 19). Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Kris Shakes made 11 saves in the two victories, and he followed with another shut- out in a 2-0 nonconference road victory over North Carolina Greensboro on Sept. 23. The Lions also defeated Howard 3-1 on Sept. 27 before the winning streak came to an end with a 0-0 tie against 13th-ranked Michigan State on Oct. 1 in East Lansing. On Oct. 7, Penn State suffered its first loss in four weeks when it fell 2-1 to visiting Indiana. Shakes made 2 saves, boosting his total to 36 on the season, second-most in the Big Ten, while senior forward Peter Mangione scored his fifth goal of the year. But it wasn't enough to prevent PSU from falling to 6-2-3 and 2-1-1 in Big Ten play. MEN'S ICE HOCKEY: Forward Dylan Lugris scored a power-play goal early in the third period to give Penn State a season-opening 3-2 victory over Long Island University on Oct. 7 at East Meadow, N.Y. Lugris, a junior from Buffalo, scored with 14:47 remaining off an assist from junior forward Ryan Kirwin. The Nittany Lions also got goals from freshman forward Matt DiMarsico and Kirwan, while senior goaltender Liam Souliere made 16 saves. Penn State outshot the Sharks 32-18, including a 28-9 advantage during the final two periods. WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY: Coming off the winningest season in school his- tory, Penn State looked to challenge itself during the nonconference cam- paign, lining up a pair of two-game series against fifth-ranked Northeastern and third-ranked Colgate. The Nittany Lions won just one of those four games, pulling out a 2-1 vic- tory in the finale of their season-opening series against Northeastern on Sept. 24. Penn State got third-period goals from sophomore defender Leah Stecker and senior forward Alyssa Machado, along with 29 saves from senior goalkeeper Josie Bothun. Penn State was 1-4-1 heading into its visit to Ithaca, N.Y., for a two-game series with Cornell Oct. 13-14. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Penn State improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in Big Ten play with back-to-back five-set victories in Rec Hall over Indiana and Ohio State. Senior outside hitter Jess Mruzik had 19 kills and 15 digs to help the 14th- ranked Nittany Lions outlast the Hoosiers on Oct. 6. Penn State dropped the fourth set 25-19, but junior middle blocker Anjelina Starck had 4 kills in the decisive fifth set to fuel a 15-11 win for the hosts. The following night, Mruzik had 21 kills and 12 digs, while senior middle blocker Allie Holland totaled 14 blocks to help the Nittany Lions rally past the No. 24 Buckeyes. Penn State finished with an 8-1 run to claim the decisive fifth set 15-7. FIELD HOCKEY: Super senior midfielder Mackenzie Al- lessie had a goal and an assist, and graduate goalkeeper Brie Barraco made 6 saves, lifting the Nittany Lions to a 2-1 victory over seventh-ranked Ohio State on Oct. 6 at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. Allessie's goal with 7:02 remaining was the difference in the game, and she assisted on a third-period goal by senior forward Sophia Gladieux. "We have been talking about finishing on offense and finishing a game, and tonight we did it," coach Lisa Bervinchak Love said. "I think we really did a nice job of settling down after the first period." The win over the Buckeyes broke a two-game losing streak for the 16th-ranked Nittany Lions. Heading into their Oct. 13 visit to Michigan State, the Lions were 6-5 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play. CROSS COUNTRY: Redshirt senior Evan Dorenkamp was the top overall finisher at the Paul Short Run Sept. 30 at Lehigh. Dorenkamp covered the eight-kilometer course in 23:53.7, setting a personal record and helping the Nittany Lions take fifth place in the team standings. Senior Sophia Toti paced the Penn State women, finish- ing 16th overall with a six-kilometer time of 20:40.0. Toti's finish was also a personal best, and it helped PSU place fourth as a team. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Super senior guard Makenna Marisa was named to the All-Big Ten Preseason Team for the second year in a row. Marisa was selected by both the coaches and media. A native of McMurray, Pa., Marisa averaged 17.5 points for Penn State last season and was a first-team all-conference choice. She goes into her final season ranked 10th in Lady Lion history with 1,785 career points. — Matt Herb F A L L S P O R T S N O T E B O O K Soccer goalkeeper Kris Shakes was second in the Big Ten with 36 saves through Penn State's first 11 games.
