JULY/AUGUST 2024 ■ 23 "The players, staff, coaches — we're all speaking the same language," Do- eren said. "There's nobody in there trying to figure out, 'What's he go- ing to do next? How's he going to re- spond?' They know what I'm going to do. I know how they're going to re- spond." Seeking Leadership On the field and in the locker room, NC State needs to replace the leader- ship of linebacker Payton Wilson, cen- ter Dylan McMahon and others. Until the moment arrives when the Wolfpack needs leadership from its locker room, Doeren said it's tough to project who will step forward. "I couldn't have told you a year ago that Payton was going to lead vocally the way he ended up leading," Doeren said. With that said, a few players are be- ginning to stand out. Doeren said a cou- ple of linebackers — redshirt junior Sean Brown and senior Devon Betty — are helping lead the team. All-ACC senior cornerback Aydan White also stepped up vocally for the Wolfpack. On the other side of the ball, a pair of transfers — graduate quarterback Gray- son McCall and graduate center Zeke Correll — both established themselves as leaders after arriving in January. "Zeke Correll has a big voice," Doeren said. "He's not afraid to use it." NC State kicks off its season Aug. 29 with a 7 p.m. clash against Western Car- olina at Carter-Finley Stadium. Then, the Pack plays Tennessee in Charlotte before traveling to Clemson in Week 4. Doeren acknowledged that a fast start can help program's perception nationally. Clemson and Tennessee will pose huge early-season tests, but he's more worried about the Catamounts for now. "There will be a lot of talk about those two," Doeren said. "I'm a lot more con- cerned about getting the team ready for Game 1." ■ Pos. Name Cl. Ht. Wt.
