OCTOBER 2024 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 17 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS 9th Of 18 Big Ten teams is where Michi- gan men's basketball ranked in the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook's preseason projection. The teams ahead of U-M are (in order): Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, UCLA, Ohio State, Michigan State, Oregon and USC. "He's ready to kick, and he works his business stuff throughout the week. He does a phenomenal job. He's a true pro in our eyes, and he prepares the way he should prepare." — Special teams coordinator J.B. Brown on junior kicker Dominic Zvada It was beautiful, because we say, 'The team, the team, the team,' and you could tell that's what they were all about. They had great veteran lead- ership from [running back] Blake Corum to [quarterback] J.J. McCarthy to [defensive back] Mike Sainristil. You can go on and on and on. It was a player-led team — and those are the best teams. Any team that I've ever been a part of that was a great team or a championship- caliber team, it was a player-led team, and they had great veteran leadership. It was fun to watch." — Former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard to The Wolverine on watching the 2023 national championship team, while in town with ESPN's "College GameDay" It just redefined a ton of things for me. It's hard to wake up and have a bad day at this point. It just reaffirms my why — why I want to do this and go out there and play at a high level." — Senior quarterback Davis Warren on beating leukemia and being able to play football at Michigan 8 College basketball programs were deemed "winners" this offseason by CBS Sports writer Kyle Boone, includ- ing the Wolverines. "Michigan basketball was a circus act last season with Juwan Howard finding new ways to dole out suspensions and the team crater- ing with a last-place finish in the Big Ten," Boone wrote. "The Wolverines cut ties with Howard and tabbed FAU coach DUSTY MAY as their new commander in chief, and they've steered directly into a stable environment that should produce early results. May took FAU to a Final Four two years ago and was 126-69 with the Owls. He hired former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton and a qual- ity staff that should and likely will get this program back on the rails and into contention relatively soon even in a deep Big Ten." 20 Targets for junior tight end COLSTON LOVELAND in the first two games of the 2024 season, leading the Wolverines and all tight ends nationally. In that stretch, he hauled in 16 catches for 157 yards and 1 touchdown. PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN ATHLETICS PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL
