❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS OCTOBER 2024 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 15 FIVE YEARS AGO, 2019: Michigan played a rare midseason contest against Notre Dame under the lights on Oct. 26, 2019, and took full advantage. The Wol- verines buried the Irish in a 45-14 rout, building a 45-7 lead before Notre Dame scored late. Jim Harbaugh's crew ran over the Irish start to finish, led by Hassan Haskins' 149 yards on 20 carries. Zach Charbonnet added 74 yards and a pair of touch- downs on the ground, while Michigan's defense limited the Irish to only 25 rushing yards. Quarterback Shea Patterson didn't need to throw much, connecting on 6 of 12 tosses for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. A pair of Irish QBs combined to complete 11 of 29 passes for 133 yards. The Wolverines raced off to a 17-0 halftime lead, with Jake Moody opening the scoring on a 21-yard field goal. Charbonnet added touchdown runs from 7 yards out, then from the 1-yard line. The Irish didn't crack the scoreboard until 5:27 remained in the third quarter, on a 57-yard TD drive. Michigan responded with 28 straight points, Patterson firing 8- and 16-yard touchdown passes to Donovan Peoples-Jones and Nico Collins, respectively. Michigan's Cam McGrone noted the Irish gave his team incentive right from the start, winning the coin toss and taking the football. "We as a defense saw it as a sign of disrespect," he said. "They were thinking they could take the ball first and make something happen. Right from the start, we showed them that we're here to play, and they can't get anything on us." 10 YEARS AGO, 2014: Brady Hoke's Wolverines took down Penn State the night of Oct. 11, 2014, winning a defensive battle at Michigan Stadium, 18-13. Penn State took a 13-10 halftime lead, but the Wolverines clawed back through a second half featuring no touchdowns by either team. U-M quarterback Devin Gardner gave the Wolverines an early 7-3 lead on a 43- yard touchdown pass to Devin Funchess. From there, it was placekicker Matt Wile and the Michigan defense. The Nittany Lions grabbed the halftime lead on a 32-yard field goal by Sam Ficken and a 10-yard touchdown pass following a turnover. Wile's field goals of 45, 42 and 37 yards represented Michigan's scoring for the rest of the game, along with a late safety. The U-M defense made it work, shutting out the Nittany Lions from the 11:58 mark of the second quarter on. "It was an awesome feeling," noted Michigan center Jack Miller. "It's great to get a win and get back on the right side of things. The locker room was ecstatic after the game — the guys were really excited." 25 YEARS AGO, 1999: The Wolverines dominated Purdue start to finish on Oct. 2, 1999, rolling to 5-0 with a 38-12 win at Michigan Stadium. Tom Brady threw for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Anthony Thomas rushed for 116 yards a two TDs. Purdue grabbed an early 3-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by Travis Dorsch, but then the Wolverines took over. Brady fired an 18-yard touchdown pass to David Terrell, followed by a 17-yarder to Marcus Knight. Thomas' 1-yard TD dive fol- lowed by another Dorsch field goal made it 21-6 at the half. The Boilermakers opened the second half with their final points, on a 66-yard Drew Brees touchdown throw. Thomas' 5-yard touchdown run set off another scoring flurry by the Wolverines, who breezed to the win. "They kind of smoked us that day," Brees noted, years later in recalling the game. "A little Purdue welcome to The Big House. They were pretty stout that year, and Tom had a great day." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY FOOTBALL SEASON NEWSLETTERS Exclusively For Wolverine Magazine Subscribers BE SURE TO GET YOUR EMAIL ON OUR LIST!* The Wolverine Now digital newsletter is emailed every Thursday and Sunday of game weeks during football season.
