DECEMBER 2024 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 13 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS ❱  Getting To Know Men's Swimming And Diving Sophomore Colin Geer Sophomore Colin Geer placed 13th in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships last season, posting a personal-best time of 1:41.23 after being named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He finished eighth in the 100-yard butterfly, fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley at the Big Ten Championships. Geer was a second-team All-American in 2023-2024 and is looking to build off his stellar first season with the Wolverines. Here are some things about Geer that you may not have known: Best Aspect Of Being From Long Beach, Calif.: "It's really athletics-based. Long Beach calls itself the aquatic capital of the world." Favorite Restaurant In Ann Arbor: "Sava's." Best Meal He Can Cook By Himself: "A New York strip or a ribeye, and I put some potatoes in the air fryer and make some green beans." Favorite Professional Athlete: "I'm stuck between [Detroit Lions quarterback] Jared Goff and [Los Angeles Lakers forward] LeBron James. When I was a teenager growing up in Southern California, LeBron went to the Lakers. That's when I really started getting into sports." Sport He Enjoys Besides Swimming: "I played baseball until I was 13 years old, and I liked baseball a lot. I still follow baseball a ton. I'm a huge Dodgers fan." Favorite Movie: "Either some of 'The Avengers' movies but also Christopher Nolan movies. 'Interstellar' is a classic." Favorite TV Series: "I like watching stuff that's based on true stories, like the ESPN '30 for 30s.'" Why He Chose Michigan: "I actually always wanted to swim at USC. My dad went to USC. So, going through the recruiting process, that was at the top of my list. I took some other trips. I was like, 'I'll give Michigan a try.' The academic appeal really got to me. And then I got here and the college town atmosphere of Ann Arbor hooked me. I went against what I wanted to do the first 17 years of my life. I couldn't be hap- pier here." What He Hopes To Do After Michigan: "Something along the lines of finance, banking, consulting." Favorite Memory At Michigan: "When we went to NCAAs in Indianapolis, after the last night of NCAAs, there was a shooting downtown. So, we just decided to go hang out at the hotel. It was the nine of us just hanging out in a hotel room. We had just finished the season. It's things like that, that I'll always remember, hanging out with the guys. The stress of swimming is all off for a second, and you just spend time with your teammates." Overall Experience At Michigan: "It's been great. I have great teammates. I had that coaching staff change right when I was about to come in freshman year, and there was uncertainty. They've been great, and it was almost like a blessing in disguise. Academics have been great." — Clayton Sayfie Geer was named 2024 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, becoming the second straight Wolverine men's swimmer to earn the honor after Eitan Ben-Shitrit captured the accolade in 2023.
