DECEMBER 2024 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 31 ❱ MICHIGAN FOOTBALL help to get ready. Just going out there on game day trying to get better and win. "[A bowl game] is just another oppor- tunity to play football. It's important to everybody. Everybody wants to get on the field out there. For young guys, it's important because sometimes they don't get as many reps as they want. A bowl game allows them to do that. But with the older guys, it still allows them to do that. Obviously, some guys sit out. We don't know who it is going to be, but it is what it is." SECONDARY INJURIES, BAD CALL DOOMED U-M IN LOSS TO OREGON Instant replay was supposed to fix horrible officiating mistakes, and for the most part, it has. But there are still some that inexplicably slip through the cracks, and Michigan was on the wrong end of one in a 38-17 loss to No. 1-ranked Or- egon in Ann Arbor Nov. 2. The Ducks drove the field and took an early lead on Michigan with a 2-yard touchdown pass in which quarter- back Dillon Gabriel threaded a needle. Michigan corner Aamir Hall, filling in for injured starters Will Johnson (out the previous two games and three quar- ters of a loss at Illinois before that) and Jyaire Hill, had good coverage, but re- ceiver Evan Stewart seemed to make an outstanding catch to give the Ducks the first score. Upon further review, it appeared clear the ball had hit the ground. What was third-and-goal from the 2-yard line should have been fourth-and-goal. But the officials on the field appeared to miss the call, and the replay officials did, too. "Every touchdown is supposed to be reviewed," Michigan head coach Sher- rone Moore said. "That's something we've got to talk to the Big Ten about. Every touchdown is supposed to be re- viewed, so that definitely should have been called and looked at." Oregon had been moving the ball well and might have scored anyway. At the same time, the Wolverines could have gotten a stop and an early boost, too. Referee Ron Snodgrass defended the call after the game. "All scoring plays are reviewed and cleared by replay. That's why we al- ways hold up the try, and we're looking like two thumbs up from the replay as- sistants on the field," he said. "We got that and moved on from the play. That's what happened. "It was cleared from replay on that play, otherwise we wouldn't have moved on from the play. Scoring plays, turn- overs, everything of that nature is auto- matically reviewed from replay." Nobody knows what would have Head coach Sherrone Moore was unhappy with a missed replay call on Oregon's first touch- down, but he was pleased with his team's effort in a 38-17 loss to the No. 1 Ducks.
