AUGUST 2025 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 11 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Jaishawn Barham Will Surprise By Chris Balas This is a bold prediction given the Michigan linebacker only had 1 sack a year ago, but he was extremely close to getting home on several pass rushing attempts blitzing from his linebacker position. There was talk of moving him to the edge this year, and he'll get some reps there — while it's not a full-time move, he should get his opportunities. Defensive coordinator Wink Martin- dale said this spring he expects to build his defense around the strength of his linebackers, and that means mov- ing Barham around. He'll be asked to speed rush from the edge, blitz more, and create havoc with the pass rush. He's got great speed and instincts and came on strong at the end of last season. Senior Derrick Moore is due for a breakout season, and he'll do well here. Veteran TJ Guy, too, is being overlooked. For some reason, though, we like Barham to step up and lead the team in sacks. Some believe he's a Butkus Award candidate, and he'll get his shot. Derrick Moore Will Have The Most By Clayton Sayfie Graduate edge TJ Guy is actually Michigan's returning sacks leader, having posted 5.5 last season, but senior Derrick Moore is primed to put up the big- gest number on the team in 2025. Moore has been a productive pass rusher his entire career, totaling 11 sacks over the last three seasons. The quarter- back takedowns just didn't come last year, with only 2 in the regular season before doubling that total in the 19-13 ReliaQuest Bowl victory over Alabama. There will be more performances like that one, and it's not as if he can't finish plays at the passer. Moore recorded 37 pressures last season, according to PFF, tied with Josaiah Stew- art for the most on the team. The 6-foot-3, 256-pounder missed one game with injury — the only time in his col- lege career that he's had to sit — showing that he's extremely durable and should play the lion's share of snaps on one side of the line this fall. Guy has the next-best chance of leading the team in sacks, while senior linebackers Ernest Hausmann (2 sacks in 2024) and Jaishawn Barham (1) and graduate defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny (1.5) will certainly add to the team's pass-rush efforts. ❱ POINT ❙ COUNTERPOINT ❰ WHO WILL LEAD MICHIGAN IN SACKS IN 2025?
