OCTOBER 2025 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 43 ❱ MICHIGAN BASKETBALL Michigan basketball coach Dusty May continued his incredible suc- cess on the recruiting trail in landing Quinn Costello, a 6-foot-10, 2026 standout out of Boston who continued his ascension in the rankings this summer with an outstanding AAU season. After taking a trip to Michigan State and giving Purdue a long, hard look, Costello found what he was looking for in Ann Arbor Sept. 13 week- end, committing to the Wolverines Sept. 16. " That's a great coaching staff," Costello said earlier this year. "I find myself to be most successful in systems where the player- coach relationship is more than just passing a player-coach, when you really get to know each other. I really value that, and so do they. I really like that about them. "It's Michigan. The Big House. They took me everywhere [on a previous visit], and all the facilities are amazing. The football field is ginormous. It's awesome." More than anything, though, Costello made it clear he was looking for the right fit. Sources said other coaches were negative recruiting the Wolverines, but May and his staff were all about the bonding. That was right up Costello's alley. "The relationship piece is going to be big for me," he said. "I'm most successful when the coaches really trust me and I really trust the coaches, and we have a super strong, unbreakable relationship. I say it a lot, and I hate to say it, but if basketball doesn't work out, I'm still at a school where I'm set up for success." A self-described "long, versatile wing-forward," Costello made a huge move up the rankings from his initial appearance at No. 130, checking in at No. 28 nationally in the Rivals ratings and No. 44 in the Rivals Industry Ranking that weighs an average of the three major recruiting sites. An outstanding shooter out of The Newman School in Boston, he shined with the AAU Middlesex Magic, earning MVP honors of the prestigious Pangos All-American Camp and top 10 honors from On3 at the elite NBPA Top 100 Camp. "I play a lot of the floor," he reported. "I guard more fours and fives than threes, but I'd say I'm pretty flexible. I can really shoot it — that's my number one strength. I've been known as a knockdown shooter for most of my life, but I've started to do a lot more, like putting the ball on the floor, driving on close- outs, offensive rebounding, running the floor, all that stuff." Coaches took notice. Purdue, Minnesota, Michigan State, North Carolina and Texas were his other finalists, but he received doz- ens of offers and was on the verge of more. The Wolverines got a good one, On3's Ja- mie Shaw praised after the pledge. "When you look at him, it is hard not to see the long-term upside he has, starting with his 6-foot-10 height and his fluid athleticism," Shaw reported. "For a player his size, Costello is a unique mover, playing with loose hips, and he can get above the rim in traffic off straight line drives." His game is currently built around the shooting, he added. "He has a soft, repeatable release that he sustains from different levels in the half- court," Shaw continued. "He is best shooting with his feet set, but he developed his bal- ance points this summer, shooting off various movements. "While he needs to continue working through this piece, move- ment shooting does project looking ahead. He has also added to his game off the bounce. He will still need to work through one and two dribble pull-ups along with some self-creation, but he proved this summer he can attack a late closeout and make a play at the basket." Added strength will help — he's currently listed at 195 pounds — but he'll have plenty of time for that before he arrives in Ann Arbor next year. — Chris Balas Date Opponent Location Oct. 25 at St. John's (exhib.)
