4 THE WOLVERINE ❱ SEPTEMBER 2026 HOOPS PRACTICE INSIGHT Spent a few hours at a hoops scrim- mage today. I had high hopes before watching up close, now I'm counting the days. This team is going to be elite. A few takeaways: Spoke to Coach Boynton for a bit, to- tally get why the players love him. Really great energy and incredibly affable. All his assistants seemed solid, and I was very impressed watching them coach the practice. Mike Martin in particular. Moller and Moustapha both looked huge, and Thiam in particular was a major presence on the floor. After a season in the weight room here, both of them are going to be beasts. Estrella is psyched to be here, really good dude and looked great. Seems like he's really meshing well with the other guys. McCoy is ripped. He has an air about him that I haven't seen in a freshman here in a while, curious to see how that plays out. Missed a good handful of 3s but more than made up for it with sev- eral impressive drives to the hoop. He's going to be a star. Talked to Trey for a bit. Always im- pressed how humble he is. Primed for a big season. His leadership is going to be big for this team. Thought it was cool they had real refs there for a scrimmage. Zavier Simpson was on the practice court and was wrapping up when I got there though. Watched the women practice for a bit as well, KBA is one of my favorite hu- mans (coaches or otherwise) I've had the pleasure of meeting. The best. The future is very bright. Junglebar RENT-FREE FOR O$U So Michigan is still living rent free in- side Ryan Day's head. ... O$U is appar- ently moving Senior Day up from last game of the year (i.e., Michigan) to first game of the year (no-name patsy oppo- nent) to help the team focus on beating Michigan without the emotional dis- traction/toll from Senior Day. Note: O$U hasn't beaten Michigan in Columbus since 2018. Ryan Day has never beaten Michigan in Columbus. Ctblue72 BUCHANAN CAN GO JJ Buchanan is a baller. Dude is one of those guys who finds ways to come down with the ball regardless of where it is thrown. Seems like we are always playing against these guys. Now we have one of our own. Can't wait to see it happen when it counts. Marinwolve HITER A FUTURE A-A? Savion Hiter is 18 years old but only technically completed 31/2 years of high school. I am torn on how effective he can be. If he graduated in May, I say All-American for sure. Right now I am thinking he is going to need to spend a lot of time working on head fakes and footwork to have any impact this fall. Sasquatch616 CARR'S BRADY USAGE? Does Lloyd Carr not receive enough criticism for his usage of Tom Brady? I mean, there's a chance that he really didn't start to improve until he got to the NFL, but I think even that isn't true, because he had extreme early success in the NFL. And him winning a title in Tampa Bay and Bill Belichick essentially flaming out proves that Brady was the key to success, not the coaching. Maybe I'm way off base, because he wasn't ready his freshman year and sophomore year they won a national championship, but it just seems like a 20-5 record leaves a lot to be desired for the greatest player in NFL history.
