OCTOBER 2026 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 9 BY ANTHONY BROOME U -M Athletics stepped into the in-sta- dium sponsorship arms race shortly before the start of the 2026 football sea- son, announcing Aug. 19 the Leaders and Best Champion Partners Program. The new initiative brings limited advertising into Michigan Stadium for the first time in the famed venue's 99-year history. U-M's inaugural partners are Coca- Cola, Meijer and Google Gemini, each selected for their fit with the university's brand and its "fan-first experience," ac- cording to the athletics department. The move puts U-M in company with several Big Ten and national powers that have already cashed in as college athletes enter the revenue-sharing era. Others, such as Notre Dame and Ohio State, have announced jersey patch sponsorships, but U-M is remaining more restrained in its approach for now, focusing on stadium branding, scoreboard integrations, end zone signage and digital in-game activa- tions. All signage is limited to U-M's maize, blue and white color palette, with the most visible signage in both end zones and on the north scoreboard. Athletics director Warde Manuel framed the rollout as consistent with, rather than a depar- ture from, the program's identity. "The Leaders and Best Champion Partners Program reflects the next step in Michigan Athletics' proud tradition of ex- cellence," Manuel said in the announce- ment. "This is not a departure from who we are, but an evolution that strengthens our ability to remain a national leader, compete for championships, and support our student-athletes in the modern era of college athletics. "Michigan Stadium is one of the most iconic and cherished venues in all of sports, and we have been deeply in- tentional about preserving its tradition, character, and identity. As we introduce this partner program, we will do so with care and purpose, ensuring that any brand partner presence is strategic, tasteful, and aligned with the values of the University of Michigan. "We are grateful for the meaningful investment these partners are making in Michigan Athletics and, most impor- tantly, in our student-athletes. Their sup- port will help position Michigan to thrive in the evolving revenue-sharing and NIL landscape while continuing to pur- sue championship success at the highest level." Coca-Cola is now U-M's exclusive beverage provider, and Felicia Hale of Coca-Cola North America said the com- pany was looking forward to "bringing our broad range of beverages" to the Michigan community. Meijer, the Mich- igan-based retailer, has a long history of sponsorships with the school, and di- rector Melissa Conway said its presence reflects "the deep pride we share with fans across the state." Kim Damron of Learfield Sports Properties, which structured the deal alongside its Michigan Sports Proper- ties division, said the Leaders and Best Champion Partners Program reflects "a thoughtful balance of tradition and op- portunity." U-M is still in the exploratory stage of the jersey sponsorship, but the precedent has been set for a big payday. Ohio State set the early bar this summer with a deal that put a JPMorganChase logo on the uniforms of all 36 of its varsity teams, a partnership reportedly worth nearly $17 million annually. Hours later, Notre Dame topped that with a six-year agree- ment with SoFi worth a reported $18-20 million per year. Illinois, Michigan State and Wisconsin have also struck their own patch agreements this summer, part of a broader scramble among power- conference athletics departments to find extra revenue while it shares it directly with student-athletes. For now, Michigan has signaled its in- tent to move deliberately and thought- fully, keeping its most historic Big House asset — which celebrates its 100th year in 2027 — mostly unchanged while it figures out how far the market will push it. ❑ ❱ Inside Michigan ATHLETICS U-M Jumps Into Stadium Sponsorship Era Coca-Cola, Meijer, Google Gemini Now Featured In Partner Signage U-M added in-stadium sponsorship signage at Michigan Stadium in 2026, the first in the 99-year- old stadium's history.
