Under the Dome backs such as Mark Ingram Jr., Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon. Alabama's defensive template is what Kelly had in mind when he took the Notre Dame job four years ago, and it was manifested last season. "There's no question about what you have to do if you want to win a national championship: You've got to have a defense in place," Kelly said. "The rest is … if you guys watch college football, you can figure out what you have to do from there." Translation: Dynamic, game-changing quarterbacks can vault you to an elite level. In recent years with the expansion of spread looks, the passrun threat has evolved more and more in the college game, from Texas's Vince Young, to Florida's Tim Tebow, to Auburn's Cam Newton, right down to the Manziels, Mariotas and Millers today. Winston has done it much more with his arm than legs, but the threat of him running constantly keeps defenses on their heels as well. In Golson, and also Zaire, the Irish are building toward having a dual threat at quarterback in years to come. Golson remains on the West Coast, where he is training with quarterback specialist George Whitfield and keeping in constant contact with the Irish staff, with plans to re-enroll for the spring semester that begins in January. "He's in a disciplined environment, one I'm very comfortable with," said Kelly of Golson. He's not as comfortable with quarterback dramas, but has still managed to make the most of it. ✦ 7225 Heritage Square Drive, Granger, IN 574-272-2292 | SohoJapaneseBistro.com Japanese Bistro / Tapan Grill / Sushi Bar Minutes From Notre Dame
