AIR Force game notes By Dan Murphy and andrew owens Irish Offense Stays Tight Notre Dame's offensive formations belied the long list of gaudy stats that senior quarterback Tommy Rees and his band of receivers racked up in Colorado Springs. For all the personal bests and school records that Rees and company carried in tow back to South Bend, they didn't look like the wideopen, basketball-on-grass type of offense that normally has the gears to produce that many points. The air attack was set up in large part thanks to Notre Dame's two tight ends, who rarely left the Falcon Stadium turf and were almost never detached from the rest of the offensive line. Junior Ben Koyack made two catches for 29 yards, one of them his second career trip to the end zone. Red Zone EffIciency (Inside 20-Yard Line) No Poss. TD FG Score Air Force 21 01 Notre Dame 22 00 The two-tight-end alignment with juniors Troy Niklas (above) and Ben Koyack, who combined to make four catches for 49 yards and a score, helped open up both the run and pass for the Irish against Air Force. photo by bill panzica Notre Dame vs. Air Force Quarter-By-Quarter Comparison Air Force 1st Qtr. 2nd Qtr. 3rd Qtr. 4th Qtr. 1st Half 2nd Half Total Time of Possession5:328:526:509:36 14:24 16:26 30:50 3rd-Down Conversions 0-23-52-42-6 3-7 4-10 7-17 4th-Down Conversions 1-10-00-00-2 1-10-2 1-3 Average Field Position AF-27AF-25AF-29AF-19 AF-25AF-25 AF-25 Notre Dame 1st Qtr. 2nd Qtr. 3rd Qtr. 4th Qtr. 1st Half 2nd Half Total Time of Possession9:286:088:105:24 15:36 13:34 29:10 3rd-Down Conversions 2-31-31-21-3 3-62-5 5-11 4th-Down Conversions 0-01-10-00-0 1-10-0 1-1 Average Field Position ND-19ND-37ND-35ND-36 ND-28ND-35 ND-32
