football recruiting Irish Win Over Trojans Is A Hit With Recruits By Tom Loy T he biggest football recruiting weekend of the season has officially wrapped up at Notre Dame. The Irish coaching staff hosted 14 official visitors from the class of 2014, and plenty of unofficial visitors from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 classes. On the field, Notre Dame got the job done with its 14-10 defeat of USC, which marked the team's first win over the Trojans in South Bend since 2001. Off the field, the atmosphere was electric, the fans were intense and a positive impression was left in the eyes of the recruits in attendance. Elizabethtown, Ky., five-star defensive tackle Matt Elam made the trip to South Bend, and Notre Dame made a major impact with the 6-6, 350-pounder. "It was an amazing game," said Elam, who is ranked as the No. 7 overall player in the class of 2014, the No. 2 defensive tackle in the country and the No. 1 recruit in Kentucky by 247Sports. "It was an incredible atmosphere. This place is just incredible." Alabama, Kentucky and Notre Dame currently comprise Elam's top three. Look for him to make a return visit to South Bend with his mother later this season.
