Other Notre Dame alumnae to play on WNBA champions were Coquese Washington, Ruth Riley (twice) and Jacqueline Batteast, with Riley and Batteast both playing for the Detroit Shock in 2006 (coached by Notre Dame graduate Bill Laimbeer). Riley, a 13-year veteran of the WNBA, was on Atlanta's team this year. 8 Atlantic Coast Conference members among the top 50 in the most recent "Best College" rankings released in the annual US News & World Report. The 15-member ACC member institutions combined for an average rank of 48, marking the seventh straight year the league has led all Football Bowl Subdivision conferences. The ACC also was the lone power five conference to place more than half of its member institutions among the top 50. ACC schools among the top 50 were Duke (No. 7), Notre Dame (No. 18), Virginia and Wake Forest (tied for No. 23), North Carolina (No. 30), Boston College (No. 31), Georgia Tech (No. 36) and Miami (No. 47). Rounding out the league were Clemson, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Syracuse (all No. 62), Virginia Tech (No. 69), Florida State (No. 91) and North Carolina State (No. 101). 18 Times since 1936, the first season of the Associated Press poll, Notre Dame's record after seven games was 5-2. This year marked only the fourth time in those 18 seasons that the Fighting Irish weren't ranked in the AP poll with the 5-2 mark. The others were 1951, 2004 and 2008. The Irish finished 7-2-1 and unranked in the final AP poll in 1951, and were 6-6 in 2004 and 7-6 in 2008. 32 Penalties resulting in 113 minutes during an Oct. 20 hockey game between Notre Dame (which rose to No. 2 in the nation Oct. 21) and Michigan Tech in the 7-3 Irish victory. Michigan Tech set a record for a Notre Dame opponent as the Huskies were whistled for 18 penalties that totaled an astounding 85 minutes. The previous record against the Irish was 73 minutes on Jan. 11, 1969, against Detroit. Notre Dame committed 14 penalties versus Michigan Tech, but each was only two minutes for a total of 28.
