Under the Dome Top of The Class Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Eric Atkins — Basketball The veteran guard was one of 45 players nationwide named to the Bob Cousy Award watch list. The award is given out each season to the country's best point guard. Atkins, also an All-ACC preseason selection, has started 73 games in his first three seasons in South Bend. He averaged 11.2 points and 5.5 assists per game while leading the team with 38.2 minutes played per game in 2012-13. He's one of five ACC players up for the award. Greg Andrews — Tennis Notre Dame's top singles player made it to the final round of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Oct. 17-21 in Columbus, Ohio. Andrews, the No. 2 seed going into the tournament, lost to top-seeded Peter Kobelt from Ohio State in the final. In addition, Andrews and sophomore Alex Lawson were the runners-up in the doubles final. They also lost to the Buckeyes in a tiebreaker set. Andrews is in his final season with the Irish after making the Capitol One Academic All-America team last year. Lee Kiefer — Fencing The sophomore helped Notre Dame's fencing team claim a win at its opening event this season by taking gold in the women's foil event. Kiefer beat twins Mai and Mona Shaito from Ohio State to seal a team win in foil as well. The former Olympian and North American Cup gold medal winner finished 17th overall at the Senior World Championships this summer. She won an individual national title for the Irish last spring. Ailish Sheehan — Rowing The Ireland import set the timing for Notre Dame while sitting stroke for the women's varsity eight boat at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta Oct. 21. Sheehan and her teammates finished sixth in a 39-team field. Sheehan was an All-Big East first-team pick last season for the conference champs and competed for Ireland in the World Championships this August.
