Under the Dome Top of The Class Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Monica Torres — Softball The senior outfielder was one of three Notre Dame players to make the national Academic All-America team announced in early October. Torres, a base running specialist, appeared in 31 games for the Irish last season. She is a two-time Big East Academic All-Star and has scored 39 career runs. She joined classmate Chloe Saganowich and recent graduate Brittany O'Donnell on the academic All-America list voted on by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Tyler Wingo — Golf The Irish junior shot a career-best 68 in the opening round of The Invitational Oct. 27-29 at The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. Wingo beat par by four strokes on the first day of competition to tie for second place. He made par or better on 31 of his first 36 holes. Wingo was an All-American during his senior year of high school in Fairfax, Va., and played in 11 tournaments during his first two seasons with Notre Dame. Kaleigh Olmstead — Soccer One of several Houston area natives on the Irish roster, Olmstead helped Notre Dame to consecutive wins for the first time in a month with an early goal in a 2-0 triumph at Clemson Oct. 27. The goal was her second during her rookie season with Notre Dame. She also has three assists and has developed into a regular contributor among the Irish forwards during the second half of the year. Bogac Ayhan — Swimming The sophomore from London helped Notre Dame pick up its first dual-meet victory of the season Oct. 25 by winning two of his races. Ayhan swam the 100 backstroke in 51.7 seconds in Colorado Springs. He also led off a four-man team that won the 200 medley relay against Air Force. Ayhan helped set a school record in that event as a freshman at the Big East Championships. He was also a Big East Academic All-Star.
